Throw your loose change in the bottle or maybe even some cash, and when you’re ready to spend it, smash it open. You can get creative by choosing to save for a specific goal and decorating the exterior of the bottle to represent your investment plans. For example, try decoupaging an old handle with photos of your dream vacation destination. Set a little aside each week, and hopefully one day you’ll crack open the bottle to redeem the funds. 

5. Chalkboards:

Cover your old wine bottle in chalk paint, and you’ll have the perfect mini chalkboard for your kitchen or home bar. Use the board to display fun quotes, and incorporate it into your decor scheme. The extension Netflix party lets you watch a movie with your friends, from the comfort of your respective homes. Consider adding in a fun drinking game to go along with a classic movie. Decide on the rules beforehand, like “drink whenever Allie and Noah kiss” in “The Notebook,” and see if you can make it through the full film.

Cooking Party

Pick a recipe and send out the ingredients list ahead of time. Then, set up your laptop in your kitchen and cook alongside your friends. If you’re the host you might want to consider narrating your actions like on your favorite cooking show. Your friends can attempt to follow along, and you can all enjoy dinner and a drink together. Not exciting enough? Make it a competition. Try baking and decorating cupcakes and seeing whose creation looks like the work of the next baking champ and whose dessert disaster looks more like a scene from “Nailed It.” The loser owes the winner a round of drinks when this is all over.

The same goes for wine. There are huge differences between white and red of course, but there are also so many varieties of each. When trying new drinks, look for flavors and notes that you already know you like, as a sort of jump-off point, and be open to experimenting. If you’re drinking alone during quarantine, try to monitor your consumption to some degree. Think consciously about how often you’re drinking, how much you’re drinking, and most importantly why you’re drinking. While you don’t have to go out and make a habit tracker (though it’s not necessarily a bad idea), keep in mind how many times a week you normally drink and try not to increase the consumption too much. Be careful not to fall into a pattern of drinking to deal with your emotions, and instead use drinking in moderation as a fun quarantine activity.

If you typically have wine or beer with dinner, there’s nothing wrong with continuing the habit. In fact, you may suddenly have the free time to research what foods pair well with what drinks. Don’t feel like just because you’re home alone that you’re all alone. Your friends are still there just a FaceTime or a video call away. Organize virtual hangouts and parties. From the beginning of time, alcohol has been utilized, and often abused, by creatives. There is no argument in determining whether or not alcohol changes the way we feel, act, and think. Ultimately, alcohol changes the way we interact with and interpret things around us. Don’t all “creative people” do just the same? Two of the planet’s most famous painters were known to find inspiration for their works through alcohol. In 1890, Vincent Van Gogh created the famous portrait painting titled “The Drinkers” (below) which portrays four generations sharing a drink together at a table. Another influential artist, Pablo Picasso, shares both an innate ability to paint and the preferred drink of aesthetes at the time (absinthe). Let it be known that Picasso’s last words were upon his death were, “Drink to me.”

A notable Irish poet and playwright to mention is Oscar Wilde. It is he who stated, “Only the unimaginative can fail to find a reason to drink Champagne.” Stephen King, author of The Shining, told The Fix Magazine that he doesn’t remember writing some of his novels spanning over 600 pages long due to his drinking habits. However, many of these famous artists suffered from alcoholism, so is it necessary to form such drastic habits in order for alcohol to influence your creativity?

Australian scientist Dr. Mathias Benedek says otherwise! Dr. Benedek explores two theories which are supported by research composed on those drinking in moderation with just one pint of beer or wine. He found that many people get fixated, or stuck, on one way to solve any problem which presents itself. Alcohol inhibits our ability to focus on just one thing and causes our mind to be a bit more sporadic, meaning we are quick to think of different ways to address something – not always successful in solving the problem, but definitely creative!

Yea – let’s keep going.

You might not remember that drunken photo being taken, but the photo itself is sure to bring you back to a cherished place in time. Find some photos from a birthday, wedding, celebration, or even just a good time with friends. This stop will undoubtedly get you in your feels. 

Whether it’s dusting off the old photo album or going back in time through social media, you’ll need photos for this one. This particular stop is best shared with friends – sending an old picture to a friend or family member could brighten someone’s day… or worsen it. All depends on the picture!

Many times, the truth just needs to be heard. Many times, people will be glad that you’ve said what you felt. Sometimes, people are relieved when you finally say what you are truly feeling. Other times, they resent you for it. Remember that old saying? “Stick and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me.” That’s false. Don’t believe me? Try to think of a time when someone said something, anything, that pissed you off or made you feel uncomfortable. I’ll wait…..

Well, that didn’t take long. By the way, I’m sorry for bringing that up. You get the point. So why is it we get so moody when whiskey hits our lips? Why do we speak our mind when the wine starts flowing? Where does this bravado and liquid courage come from?

Simply put; alcohol consumption lowers our inhibitions. Inhibitions are what make us self-conscious and less likely to act how we feel. Alcohol doesn’t make us do bad things, but it does lower our inhibitions. This means that we don’t think much about how things will play out after we say or do something, we also don’t care as much for whatever the consequence may be (at the time).

Alcohol demands our brains to release more serotonin and endorphins. These chemicals dictate our emotions and how we feel. The more we drink, the more our brain is affected, ultimately swaying our moods based on our circumstances. It could be the tension within a fight between you and your partner or even the excitement you feel when entering a bar or club. Whatever the situation is, we feel so revved up about it because we have an excess of mood altering chemicals flooding our brain. 

Next time you enjoy a few adult beverages, keep Jean-Jaques Rousseau’s french philosophy in mind, “A drunk mind speaks a sober heart.” Or maybe don’t take what he says too personally. After all, he was known to be a bit of a drunk himself. At least he speaks the truth! Right?
