New York City can easily be considered the world’s largest cultural, professional, and artistic melting pot. With the multitude of neighborhoods, boroughs, and suburbs, there are almost too many bars and clubs to rank in any real fashion. While NYC is a city of dreams and one that never sleeps, it certainly isn’t cheap. Just driving through the Lincoln Tunnel can cost upwards of $30, and parking is never an easy task. It’s rare to find a bar in the greater metropolitan area that closes before 4am, and for that very reason here are some tips for drinking in the Big Apple.

1. Take to the streets

Beginning Spring 2016, New York City police can no longer arrest individuals for drinking in public. While this isn’t exactly condoned, it can be a solid option for anyone willing to take a risk. Maybe you just want to chill and take a stroll outside your brother-in-law’s new Manhattan condo while sipping a Manhattan cocktail like the architecture-loving tourist you are. Well, sip away! But let it be known that you may still get a summons, just not a free stay in the slammer.

2. Find a Power Hour

Every once in a while you’ll run into gems like the former Trash Bar (RIP) located in Williamsburg. This divey yet delectable punk rock establishment was adorned with Sharpie graffiti, mis-matched tables, and red velvet curtains to welcome enthusiastic live music patrons. Listeners willing to pay a cover to enter the back room venue were free to enjoy a Power Hour for the first two hours of the show, which included all-you-can-drink wells and PBR. While Trash Bar no longer exists, there are countless other bars offering as much booze as you can tolerate for a flat $10-15 charge.

3. Go Cruisin’

If you’re in the mood to enjoy the scenery, consider gazing from the sea with a sophisticated New England meal and a glass of wine. Many restaurants, such as The Water Table, are performing culinary maritime magic with weekend boat cruises starting at $80 for a three-course meal to be enjoyed at sea with the sunset. Skip the cost of gas, tolls, and parking to multi-task with a luxurious view and romantic dining experience.

4. Lounge in the Lobby

If you’re visiting NYC from out of town be sure to first take a quick peak around your hotel. New York is known for its hotels being home to some of the best cocktails in the city. Historically, hotel bars were the ideal place for professionals to break away and relax with a quality stiff drink. Authentic hotel bars such as Bemelmans Bar at The Carlyle have become destination spots for citizens and tourists alike with its chic decor and premium classic cocktails. While drinks can’t exactly be covered with pocket change, the patron is there for the experience and quality intended to be savored.

5. Hang out on the rooftop

New York has an abundance of rooftop bars, but perhaps a better alternative is to get a bottle or six-pack to enjoy at home under the stars where the chaos dies down and the relaxation sets in.
