Mint Juleps are a popular drink made with Kentucky Bourbon, water, mint syrup, shaved or crushed ice, and mint leaves. It is a tasty, frosty beverage that many enjoy. It’s popular, especially at the Kentucky Derby. However, have you ever wondered how this tradition started? Well, here’s the details. You know, just FYI.

First, the Mint Julep became the signature drink of the Kentucky Derby in 1938 when it was sold in souvenir glasses for 75 cents. Could you imagine how many would sell today at that price!

Since the Derby has a contract with Brown-Forman, it has been very easy to attain alcohol for this world-famous horse race. Additionally, although mint juleps are not that difficult to make, advertising it in special cups has helped the Kentucky Derby to coin the drink. They have even created special cups that are gold with silver straws! The special custom-made juleps are $1000 each. We’ve already established that the higher the price, the better the quality must be, so if you have it, buy it!

Supposedly, the track founder, Merriweather Lewis Clark grew mint for Juleps before the track even opened. With such a passion, how could it not turn into the signature drink? Also, habit brings tradition. Looking for the best Mint Julep ever? Head to the Kentucky Derby the first weekend in May each year!
