Do a paint-by-number.

For people who love to sit down with paint and a brush but aren’t particularly artistic, paint-by-numbers are a fun alternative to blank canvases. They come with all the paints you’ll need, brushes and a ready-made picture with numbers to correspond with the paints. Even if you’re a little tipsy, these are super fun and can be challenging if you pick the right one. Invite a few friends over to paint or do other projects with you. You’ll create a beautiful piece of art for your home and have fun doing it.

Organize your closet.

We could all use this time to bring some organization into our homes. Pour yourself a glass of vino and start with the closet. Pour another and find all the lids for your storage containers. Invite your friends and family to pick through your closet for items they want and maybe return the favor. By the end, you’ll have a more organized house and a nice buzz.

Plant something.

You don’t need much. A little potting soil, some seeds and sunny spot. A little time in the sunshine digging in the soil does the mind and body good. Research what kinds of flowers or herbs grow best in your climate and how often to feed and water them. Then sit back with a cold wine spritzer (or Budlight Seltzer) and watch them sprout and grow!

Flowers are therapeutic to grow and make your home look and smell fresh.

Start a blog or journal.

Not every one likes the thought of sitting down and writing out their thoughts. But it can be a very therapeutic process, especially when you’re anxious or have a lot on your mind. Drink a glass of wine before you sit down to write to relax you and get the juices flowing. Then just start writing. Even if it’s not Stephen King grade, you might find out a little about yourself and release some stress in the process.

Take a bath.

Nothing quite beats a glass of deep red wine and a warm bath. Dump in that anti-bacterial hand soap to make yourself feel better and sip something while you soak your worries away. Throw in some epsom salts to soothe any sore muscles and remove toxins. Pour your partner a glass too and relax in the tub together.

Enjoy the down time in your home with the ones you love- and a little bit of wine.

1. Shandyland

A twist on our favorite candy-themed boardgame, set the game up as normal but every time you pick a colored-square card, follow the following drinking rules:

BLUE CARD- guys drink
PURPLE CARD- girls drink
ORANGE CARD- player who picked the card drinks
YELLOW CARD- player who picked the card picks someone to drink
DOUBLE CARD- player who picked the card drinks and picks one other player to drink as well
PEOPLE CARDS- player must choose a random person/celebrity and other players must ask YES or NO questions until they guess the person. Whoever wins this challenge gets to choose who drinks.
PLACES CARDS- player must choose TRUTH or DARE and the person to the left can ask a question or dare them to do something. The player may opt out by downing the rest of their drink.

Play this game with a delightful shandy recipe using your favorite beer!

2. Battle Shots

You don’t need the game or pieces for this one, but you will need a few other items:
-12 shot glasses (size doesn’t matter)
-a divider of some sort for the middle of the table (you can even stack some books- just make sure the other team can’t see where your battleshots are)
-a marker
-light colored table cloth you can write on

Use a ruler or book to create a battle ship board on the table cloth. Label the x-axis with letters and the y-axis with numbers, place your shots and start calling out coordinates. If you have a shot on B5 and the other team guesses “B5″, you must sink your battleshot- into your mouth. Keep the shots at 1 ounce for maximum play time.

3. Twisted-er

The game of Twister is already hard enough when you’re sober. Make the rule if you fall you drink, and its hilariously impossible. Use food coloring in shots of light colored liquor to make it even more interesting. If you miss a red dot, drink a red shot.

4. Pictionary

This game gets more and more fun as it goes along. Have everyone write phrases on separate index cards. 20 phrases per person is good. It makes it fun to put inappropriate stuff on the cards, but obviously, know your audience. Phrases could be things like “Does a bear scat in the woods?” or “She’s not the brightest crayon in the box.” Divide into teams and start picking cards to draw for the other team to guess. Set a timer for 1 minute and if they haven’t guessed the phrase, they drink and your team gets a point. Whoever has the most points wins!

Don’t mix stuff.

This is true for anytime you’re drinking but in Amsterdam it can be very tempting to try everything in the world at once. With so many things to try, its common for people to start with cocktails and then wander into a coffee shop or truffle store and get a little more twisted than they can handle. If you’re not a veteran smoker, try it on its own without the drink first to see how you react. You can always drink when your high has worn off.

Watch for bikes.

If you’re coming from a place where most people drive cars, you may not be used to people shooting by you on bicycles at all hours of the day and night. In Amsterdam, the bike lanes get just as crowded as the car lanes and are right next to the sidewalk. If you’re not careful, you can easily stumble in front of someone’s bike which would be a tragedy for both you and the rider. Keep an eye out and stay on the sidewalk where others are walking. At crosswalks, look for bikes before you walk.

Don’t take drinks from strangers.

Most people in Amsterdam are well-meaning locals and tourists just looking to have a good time. But, like any city, there are people looking to prey on unsuspecting partiers. Its generally a good rule never to take accept drinks from strangers. If someone wants to buy you a cocktail, make sure its coming directly from the bartender. If you feel stranger that usual from a few drinks, seek medical help to be sure nothing was dropped in without you knowing.

Careful with balloons.

Nitrous balloons are legal in Amsterdam. If you’re not familiar with this, it’s a balloon filled with nitrous gas that you inhale and go on a little trip. It only lasts a few seconds but is not very good for your brain or general health. Many bars sell balloons as well as sketchy street salesman- but I wouldn’t recommend trying it if you’ve had a few drinks. Inhaling the gas affects people differently and can sometimes cause seizures or loss of consciousness. Drinking in addition to nitrous can be especially harmful if you’re not sure how it will affect you.

Overall, Amsterdam is a safe, fun city with lots to do and drink. Taking common sense precautions will ensure you have a fun time drinking without dying.

THE QUARANTINI

A new spin on a yellow fever, the quarantini is a combination of sweet and sour- kind of like life when you’re stuck at home.

1 1/2 ounces vodka
1/2 ounce Galliano
1/2 ounce lime juice
1 ounce pineapple juice
garnish with toilet paper to show how rich you are

THE VODKA-C 

Put a little vitamin C into your life with this spritzer. Orange juice and any immune boosting powder added to vodka creates a funny little ode to our immune systems and a delicious, hilarious party drink.

2 oz vodka
splash of orange juice
1/2 Emergen-C packet
splash of sparking water
garnish with oranges

THE CURE

Find some old test tubes or beakers you have laying around and come up with your own cure- for quarantine boredom- with this delightful mix. You can substitute with any blue liquor.

2 oz Hypnotiq
2 oz white wine
splash of ginger ale
serve in beaker for maximum effect

The Social Dist-shandy

This one is for sharing with your social distancing buddies while relaxing in your yard watching the grass grow.

1 bottle Budlight beer
2 oz peach brandy
splash of strawberry lemonade
garnish with a face mask to make sure no one coughs into it

THE BOREDOM BOWL

This is for the third week of quarantine, when you’ve organized your entire closet, deleted all 700 of your spam e-mails and watched everything on Netflix. It’s boring, but delicious.

2 oz strawberry liqueur
2 oz strawberry Budlight Seltzer
splash of orange juice
garnish with a strawberry that you have removed all the seeds from with tweezers

So how do you make these excellent party favors?

Step 1: Boil the water

You want to make sure you have a clear ice cube for optimal effect,so use filtered, boiled water. This will prevent imperfections in the ice. Once you’ve boiled the water let it cool completely (we’re not trying to cook anything here).

Step 2: Prepare your infusing items

Cut the fruit into small pieces so they will fit into an ice cube tray. You can use any size of cubes, just make sure your fruit is small enough to fit and freeze in the water.

Step 3: Combine the water and fruit in the tray

Pour your cooled water into the ice cube tray, leaving some space at the top. Add the fruit and freeze! Wait a couple hours for the ice to freeze (the time needed will depend on the temperature of your freezer and the size of the ice cubes), and enjoy at your next party!

You can add any kind of fruit, herb or flavoring to the cubes depending on what kind of cocktails you are making.

Why not try some lemon zest infused ice cubes to add to gin and tonic? Or lime zest for margaritas on the rocks.

You could add basil and grapefruit infused cubes to add a fresh flavor to a classic martini.

Add a coffee bean to each cube for your espresso martinis.

Blueberries or strawberries would be great in any vodka drink.

Experiment with your own combinations, sizes of fruit and mixes for the perfect garnish to your cocktails.

Step 1: Chill the bottle

The bottle needs to be cooler than you would normally keep a sparkling wine. You can submerge it in a lot of ice, but I usually just stick it in the freezer for half an hour or so. It should be long enough to be very cold but not frozen.

Step 2: Find a good spot

The entire top of the bottle is about to shoot off so make sure you are not performing this directly facing anyone. It will come off with some force so be careful of anything fragile – you’ll lose a lot of the effect if you saber the bottle and break an expensive piece of artwork. Outdoor space is perfect as it will give the cork space to fly, but don’t do it out of a high window or the people below could get a nasty surprise.

Step 3: Gather a crowd

What’s the point of sabering if you don’t have a good crowd to wow?

Step 4: Pick a good saber (or knife)

The key here is to find something you can control well, it does not need to be heavy. You’re not cutting or hacking at the bottle, some people can do it with a small hit from the end of a wine glass. I recommend starting with chef’s knife.

Step 5: Remove the foil and wire from the top

Take all the foil off the top of the bottle and remove the wire basket so your saber and the cork are unimpeded.

Step 6: Find the larger seam of the bottle

Run your fingers around the bottle and you’ll feel a horizontal seam on either side of the bottle. Feel for the thicker of the two seams and place that facing up.

Step 7: Hold the bottle at a 20 degree angle

The key to this is in the angle of the bottle and your saber. If you have it at the correct angle you won’t need much pressure at all to achieve the perfect beheading.

Step 6: Behead the bottle

This is the final step, slide your saber of choice parallel to the bottle along the seam, up the neck and in a smooth motion tap the collar (the top ridge). Follow through with the saber in one gesture. Be sure not to try to cut the top off the bottle. If you chip the glass at all your angle is wrong and you are using too much force. Back off, adjust your angle and try again more softly.

ENJOY!

 Follow these instructions and (after a few practice runs) you’ll be sabering at every occasion.

Beer Types:

First, you need to know what the different types of beer are, and there are several kinds: lager, pilsner, hefeweizen, pale ale, heavy ale, stout, and more.

Lager: This is probably the most common beer type across America and the world. This is a light and balanced beer with a fairly clear color, like Budweiser or Coors.

Pilsner: This is a similar beer to a lager. It clear in color, light but has more of a bitter hoppy flavour.

Hefeweizen: This beer is light but cloudy in color. It has strong yeast and sometimes citrus flavours.

Dunkel: This beer is a little darker in color than a pilsner or lager, but not quite as dark as a Bock, with a dark and malty flavour.

Bock: These beers are stronger in flavour with a dark opaque color. They are rich with a toasty or smoky taste.

Pale ale: The beers are darker in color than a lager or pilsner but not as dark as a dunkel. They are characterized by their medium strength hoppy, aromatic flavours.

IPA (India Pale Ale): This beer is a little hoppier than other pale ales, and therefore a bit more bitter.

Amber Ale: This amber colored beer is malty with a bit of a bitter hop flavour.

Porters and Stouts: These are the darkest colored beers and have rich flavors of chocolate or roasted coffee and caramel.

Seasonal Beers: These are beers that are not made at all times of the year. Usually in the summer you’ll find light fruity beers that are good to drink in hot, sunny weather. In the winter you’ll likely find darker more chocolatey beers that are great to drink on a cold evening by a fire. Seasonal beers can be hit or miss and aren’t going to please everyone, but they’re always interesting to try.

Origins

You might also think you need to choose a beer based on location, like you might with a wine. But, unlike wines, beer production isn’t dependent on weather patterns so the location of where the beer was made isn’t very important. The only thing to consider is the history. Belgium, for example, is a small European country that is home to hundreds of high quality beers. You could drink a different Belgian beer every day of the year and not make it through each type! With that in mind, you can pretty much be guaranteed a high quality beer if it is from Belgium. That said, you can get great beers from everywhere so don’t worry too much about the origin of the brewery.

Beer Flights

A great way to try a few different types of beers it to order a flight. In a flight you will get to choose a few different beers to sample at once. This is a great way to try and compare a few types of beers to see which you prefer. This is an especially good option if you want to try something with an interesting or unique flavour (like a season beer) but you aren’t sure if you’ll enjoy it. The glasses are smaller and you’ll have other beers to drink if one isn’t pleasing to your palate.

Try More Beers

You will almost certainly not like every type of beer, but you can find a few that you will love, so try several. A flight is a good way to do try them, or order a new beer on each round. Once you find a beer or style of beer you love you will one to go back to when you’re uncertain. There’s a whole wonderful world of delicious beers to try so sample as many as you can, and as often as you can!
