Now that we have established that it is ok to love the game, it’s time to determine the rules for laying it!  The real question is: which rules do you go by, the “original” or the “official” rules?

The Original: Originally, beer pong was just played by people who wanted to combine drinking and playing.  You simply line up ten cups on a ping pong table in the formation of bowling pins and take turns throwing a ping pong ball into each one.  The use of paddles is optional.  If the other player lands a ball in one of your cups, you must immediately chug the cup and remove it.  This is the easy way to go.  But you guys order beer online, easy is SOOOO last year!  Let’s take a look at the official rules.  Brace yourself, they’re quite…official.

Shooting and Table Sides

1. In prelims, first possession will be determined by random selection. Each team will receive a printed schedule which will indicate which team has choice of first shot. Table side will be pre-determined, and will appear on each team’s schedule.
2. On day three, possession and table side will be chosen by the team with the superior rank in prelims. In the event of a tie (two teams with the same win-loss record and Cup Differential Per Game), a coin toss will determine who chooses to shoot.
3. The team with first possession will get one (1) shot. Each team will get two (2) shots for each turn thereafter, one shot per team member, subject to any other rules below.

Reformation

1. Cups must be reformed at 6, 3, and 1 cups remaining according to the diagram below:
   
2. Racks must be aligned to the center of the table. When one cup is remaining, the cup should always be pulled back to within an inch of the end of the table, and it should be placed in the center of the table.
3. Cups that drift out of position may be reformed, but only if the thrower requests.
4. Reformation is to take place as soon as it is applicable, even in the middle of a turn (i.e. mid-turn reracks).
5. Cups should be removed as soon as they are hit, even in the case where a reformation is not needed. It is the responsibility of the shooting team to wait until a hit cup is removed to take their next shot. If a team shoots while the opposing team is reforming or in the process of removing a cup from the table, and the ball goes in the cup after making contact with the defending teams hand(s), the shot will count as a miss. If a shooter hits a cup that has already been hit, it will also count as a miss.
6. If a team mistakenly shoots when a reform should have occurred, they have the right to ask for a reform after the fact. If a cup has been hit, and the shooting team then asks for a reform, the defending team gets to choose which cup gets removed from the reformed rack.

There are actually a LOT more rules, but we don’t want you to get so overwhelmed you choke on your beer.  Also, ironically enough, official beer pong is actually played with…wait for it…WATER!  Yeah, so for the sake of your sanity..and our business…we suggest that for future reference, you stick to the original rules.    Cheers!

While the major brewing companies keep their recipes a secret so that the everyday person can’t just copy their recipe, there are definitely ways to make your own.  Let’s explore that!

First: There is no specific base style that is required for a pumpkin beer.  Pick your favorite. Have fun, start with an amber, pale, wheat, porter, stout or any other style.

Next, simply add pumpkin and spices. Yep, it really is that easy. Experiment with spices that you like!  Cinnamon, Nutmeg and Vanilla Bean are pretty popular.  However, you can add whatever you want!  Maybe you could add a little vanilla extract or honey too!  Or…maybe not.  Haha.

The only important rule of thumb is that you should probably start with a recipe that isn’t very hoppy, and limit the amount of flavor and aroma hops. Hop additions for most pumpkin ales should typically consist of a single 1/2 to 1 ounce addition at 60 minutes, and nothing more. This keeps the hop flavors and aromas from getting muddled and confused with the pumpkin pie spices.

Here’s a popular base recipe.

Amber Ale, light dry malt extract, a pound of crystal 20L, and a pinch of chocolate malt.

Now for the Pumpkin.

Make sure you look for the small pumpkins that are made for pies.  Or, for all you underachievers, feel free to grab a can of pumpkin for pies instead!  Try your best to get pumpkin that does not have preservatives. How much pumpkin should you use? It’s up to you. One pound of pumpkin for 5 gallons of beer is the minimum needed to impart character, while some flavor-heavy beers can have 5 pounds for a 5 gallon batch.

Ways for adding pumpkin to beer vary widely, from adding the pumpkin to the boil or the mash or even tossing it into the carboy after fermentation is complete. Lots of people even declare that the best pumpkin beer is made without any pumpkin at all, and advise only using pie-like spices. Say whaaaaat?  While there may be some good pumpkin-free brews out there, that seems to defeat the purpose.  Don’t be like that. Instead, experiment with different techniques to maximize the potential of the pumpkin.

One thing that most brewers and tasters agree on is that you get the best flavors if the pumpkin is cooked and caramelized. Whether you’re chopping and mashing the pumpkin yourself, or you get it out of the can, it should be spread in a thin pan and baked for at least 60 minutes at 350°F. This will allow the sugars to start to cook, and give the beer the pumpkin-esque undertones that we’re looking for.

Now for the spice.  DO NOT GO OVERBOARD…IT IS WAY TOO EASY TO MAKE THE BEER UNDRINKABLE WITH TOO MUCH SPICE!!! You want to stick with just one teaspoon of spice per five gallons of beer.  This will be plenty, trust me.

#1 Beer Dispensing Jack-o-Lantern

Materials needed:

*Pumpkin

*Sharp Knife

*Large Spoon

*Your Beer of Choice

*Spigot

Directions:

*Cut a circle around the stem to create a lid, much like you would do for a regular Jack-o-Lantern using your sharp knife.

*Using your large spoon, dig out all of the “guts” and seeds.  Careful, it gets messy quickly.

*Cut a small hole near the bottom of the pumpkin (just big enough to place your spigot in.

*Place the spigot in the hole.

*Pour your beer into the top of the pumpkin (pumpkin flavor is probably most appropriate, feel free to order some from us at beerrightnow.com)

*Grab some frosted mugs and enjoy!

*Once you have hollowed out your pumpkin, look at the design of your can, and draw it on your pumpkin with a pen or permanent marker.

*Using your knife, cut out the design.  For parts that don’t need to be a hole, be sure not to dig the knife in too deeply.

*Sip your beer while admiring your work.

*Place a candle inside and glow with pride!

Let’s go back in time, specifically prohibition.  1920-1933.

Prohibition was a ban the United States placed on the production, importation, and  transportation of alcoholic beverages.  Drunkenness and other public atrocities led to this ban.  It was thought that by banning the sale and production of alcohol, the society would essentially clean itself up and not be such an embarrassment.

In 1933, prohibition was repealed and booze was now legal again!  At this point, the drinking age was just 18!  However, there weren’t any delivery services like yours truly (unless you count taking your beer out of the bar).

1) Driving Games

Alright, so drinking and driving is NEVER ok.  We repeat, drinking and driving is NEVER ok!  However, when playing Mario Kart or GTA, it probably makes the game all the more fun.  Somehow, when buzzing, it seems like it’s way easier to take down opponents with turtle shells or run over an innocent pedestrian.  And for that reason, we encourage sippin’ while playing.  However, NEVER EVER DRINK AND DRIVE AN ACTUAL CAR!

Adventure games are fun in general, but you could spice up the board game inspired video games like Mario Party by adding booze.  Maybe set the amount of sips that happen for each mini game won or the winner chugs their beer.  You could also set drinking penalties for the losers.  Maybe someone who loses a mini game has to take a shot and the losers of the over all game have to battle it out in a drinking war depending on how badly they lost (2nd place, 3rd place, etc.)

3) Get into trouble while playing Trouble!

Make this game interesting.  Each time you roll by pressing the bubble, whatever number you roll is the number of sips you must take from your drink.  By the end of the game, I’m sure there will be a lot more trouble happening besides the trouble on the game board!

4) Drink your life away playing The Game of Life!

Anytime something major happens in your life on the game, such as getting married or having kids, take a big ol’ gulp!  Pretty soon, your “life” will all be just one big blur!  Hehe.

5) Shots for Chutes and Ladders!

Anytime you slide down a chute, you need to “shoot” a shot down your guzzler.  This isn’t a child’s game anymore!

6) Sharpen your detective skills in Clue!

Was it Mr. Green with the rope in the parlor?  Heck if we know.  All we know is that when you guess you need to be taking a drink!

7) Indulge your sweet tooth with Candy Land!

I’m sure you all have had a glass of wine at some point, but the question is whether you enjoyed it.  Unlike beer, Wine is something that takes directions to drink and enjoy properly.  Even we had to take a crash course on how to accurately enjoy this fine beverage.  Luckily because we love you, we have broken down the steps to include the basics of how to indulge in a glass of your favorite wine.

The first thing to learn is how to hold a wine glass.  Keep in mind that wine is a temperature-sensitive beverage when it comes to taste.  So holding the glass that is actually holding the wine is a definite no-no.  You want to grip the base just at the bottom of the stem firmly.  Like so.

Next, before you hold  your glass, you have to actually pour some wine into the glass.  How do you even open the bottle?  Well, first you need a corkscrew.  (The fancy kind with a blade on them are cool, but not really necessary.)

To open a bottle of wine:

• Hold the bottle of wine stationary.
• Cut across the front, back, and top of the foil. Keep your fingers clear of the blade and the foil.
• Set the screw just off center and insert, rotating straight into the cork.
• Continue to screw into the cork until only one curl remains.
• Lever on the first step, then the second, finally easing the cork out with your hand.

Ok, now that you have mastered opening the bottle and holding the glass, now you’re ready to learn how to pour.  Yep, that’s right, it takes a certain skill.  When pouring wine, you want to make sure that you only pour 5-6 oz in the glass, as this is the ideal serving size.  To save yourself from that blasted dripping at the end, be sure to turn the bottle away from you as you stop pouring to redirect the wine flow back into the bottle.  Voila!  You’re a pro!

Lastly, it is time to drink!  Wine is designed to be sipped, not gulped or swallowed.  To drink wine, there are a few steps that must be followed.

• Swirl the wine GENTLY to bring out its flavors and aromas.
• Sniff the wine to bring in the aromas that accompany the taste.  This is not a giant smelling, just a gentle sniff.
• Slowly bring the wine glass up to your mouth with your nose in the glass as well to take in the smell and taste simultaneously.
• Before swallowing, allow the wine to swish around your tongue a little.  DO NOT gurgle like you would for mouthwash, simply do a gentle swish to take in the flavors.
• Repeat.
