Pumpkin Spice Kahlua

Ingredients:

2 oz Kahlua

1.5 oz simple syrup

Milk to fill

Simple Syrup:

1 cup sugar

1 cup water

2 tsp cinnamon

1 tsp nutmeg

2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions:

Simple Syrup:

Combine water and sugar together in a pot and place on medium heat until the water boils. Reduce the heat to a simmer and add the spices. Simmer for 8-10 minutes, until the sugar has dissolved.

Drink:

Place ice, kahlua, simple syrup and a splash of milk together in a cocktail shaker. Shake well. Pour in a cocktail glass over ice.

Caramel Appletini

Ingredients:

1 oz vanilla vodka

1 oz sour apple schnapps

½ oz butterscotch schnapps

Instructions:

Combine alcohol in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake well. Pour in a chilled martini glass.

Cinnamon (White) Russian

Ingredients:

2/3 oz kahlua

1 2/3 oz vodka

1 oz milk

1/2 oz simple syrup

So how do you make these excellent party favors?

Step 1: Boil the water

You want to make sure you have a clear ice cube for optimal effect,so use filtered, boiled water. This will prevent imperfections in the ice. Once you’ve boiled the water let it cool completely (we’re not trying to cook anything here).

Step 2: Prepare your infusing items

Cut the fruit into small pieces so they will fit into an ice cube tray. You can use any size of cubes, just make sure your fruit is small enough to fit and freeze in the water.

Step 3: Combine the water and fruit in the tray

Pour your cooled water into the ice cube tray, leaving some space at the top. Add the fruit and freeze! Wait a couple hours for the ice to freeze (the time needed will depend on the temperature of your freezer and the size of the ice cubes), and enjoy at your next party!

You can add any kind of fruit, herb or flavoring to the cubes depending on what kind of cocktails you are making.

Why not try some lemon zest infused ice cubes to add to gin and tonic? Or lime zest for margaritas on the rocks.

You could add basil and grapefruit infused cubes to add a fresh flavor to a classic martini.

Add a coffee bean to each cube for your espresso martinis.

Blueberries or strawberries would be great in any vodka drink.

Experiment with your own combinations, sizes of fruit and mixes for the perfect garnish to your cocktails.

Step 1: Choose your flavors

Decide what kinds of flavors you want to achieve. Are you looking for something sweet or spicy? Some good options are: pear, vanilla, chili pepper, mango, lemon peel, green tea, strawberry, basil, grapefruit, or apple. Don’t be afraid to combine different flavors to make a truly unique vodka. Why not mix strawberry and vanilla for a strawberry shortcake vodka?

Step 2: Choose a Vodka

You don’t need a top shelf brand of vodka, but you don’t want the cheapest bottle either. You want something of solid quality (so the flavor isn’t distracting from your beautiful infusion) like an Absolut or Smirnoff.

Step 3: Prepare the Ingredients

Chop up your fruit, or gather your spices. If you are using fruit you will want about 15 oz of fruit (2 apples worth) for a bottle of vodka. Cut the fruit to increase the surface area touching the vodka.

Place the fruit in a container, mason jars work well.

Step 4: Add the Vodka

Pour your vodka over the fruit, and stir it so all the fruit comes in contact with the vodka.

Step 5: Wait

Leave the infusion somewhere safe and dark for a few days. Depending on the infusion and how strong you want it you can leave it for 2 days to a week. Keep an eye on it throughout the week, you can always taste it to see how the flavor is coming along.

Step 6: Strain the Fruit

Now that the vodka has the perfect flavor you are ready to strain it. Use a regular kitchen strainer for most fruits, or if you used fine herbs you can use a cheesecloth or even a coffee filter. Make sure you strain it so that you keep the desired flavor.

Step 7: Enjoy!

You are ready to make your own cocktails or sip your infused vodka on ice. Enjoy!

Ravine Vineyard

Ravine Vineyard was established over 100 years ago and is still run by the Lowry family. The tasting room is in a beautiful old farmhouse and their tastings include 4 wines. They have a good selection of whites and reds. I also recommend trying the Cabernet Rose; it tastes of cherries and has a great dry finish.

Between the Lines

Between the Lines is another family run winery. The family farm was started by the German parents of the current owners, who studied winemaking in Germany so the wines have a bit of a German influence to them. The winery is still small and you get great service with the tasting. I recommend trying the Cabernet Franc, it’s full bodied with the taste of plum and black pepper.

Konzelmann Estate Winery

Konzelmann Estate has a great location right on the lake, making for spectacular views. They have several award winning wines, including ice wines. Their tours are particularly informative and interesting, if you are going to take a full tour at one winery in Niagara, this is the one to do. Once you get to the tasting, I recommend trying the Vidal Ice Wine, they’re sweeter than other wines and very unique.

Once you’ve finished up your tour of the Niagara wineries, make sure you stop at one of the many fresh local fruit stands to pick up peaches, pears, cherries or whatever else is in season before you head back across the border (or head to the casino).

This is a common aroma found in Sauvignon Blanc. The tangy smell is reminiscent of cat urine.

I usually prefer to wear my leather over drinking it but this aroma is common in many wines with heavy tannins.

Tobacco

Okay, a little more pleasant than the smell of manure but still not what you’d expect from something made of fermented grapes. You’ll find this aroma in many different types of wine including Gamay, Sangiovese and Grenache

Asphalt

There’s nothing better than the smell of wet asphalt right? Well, this can be true in a nice white wine with medium acidity.

Petrol

The smell of petrol or gasoline is actually a sign of a well-aged Riesling.

These aromas may seem strange, but don’t let them put  you off. They’re subtle or identifying them will make your wine tasting more interesting and fulfilling.

Orange juice

Don’t share with anyone, if they get close to your drink build a wall of pillows around you and call security.

How to make the Hillary Clinton Americana

Ingredients:

1 oz Campari

1 oz Vermouth

Sprite

Instructions:

Fill a short cocktail glass with ice. Shake the equal parts Campari and Vermouth together in a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain and pour over ice, add Sprite to fill the glass.

Next, ensure everyone has the perfect drink of their choice, don’t be afraid to micromanage, and be sure to stop anyone who is drinking more than their fair share. When finished make sure to break the glass!

Step 1: Chill the bottle

The bottle needs to be cooler than you would normally keep a sparkling wine. You can submerge it in a lot of ice, but I usually just stick it in the freezer for half an hour or so. It should be long enough to be very cold but not frozen.

Step 2: Find a good spot

The entire top of the bottle is about to shoot off so make sure you are not performing this directly facing anyone. It will come off with some force so be careful of anything fragile – you’ll lose a lot of the effect if you saber the bottle and break an expensive piece of artwork. Outdoor space is perfect as it will give the cork space to fly, but don’t do it out of a high window or the people below could get a nasty surprise.

Step 3: Gather a crowd

What’s the point of sabering if you don’t have a good crowd to wow?

Step 4: Pick a good saber (or knife)

The key here is to find something you can control well, it does not need to be heavy. You’re not cutting or hacking at the bottle, some people can do it with a small hit from the end of a wine glass. I recommend starting with chef’s knife.

Step 5: Remove the foil and wire from the top

Take all the foil off the top of the bottle and remove the wire basket so your saber and the cork are unimpeded.

Step 6: Find the larger seam of the bottle

Run your fingers around the bottle and you’ll feel a horizontal seam on either side of the bottle. Feel for the thicker of the two seams and place that facing up.

Step 7: Hold the bottle at a 20 degree angle

The key to this is in the angle of the bottle and your saber. If you have it at the correct angle you won’t need much pressure at all to achieve the perfect beheading.

Step 6: Behead the bottle

This is the final step, slide your saber of choice parallel to the bottle along the seam, up the neck and in a smooth motion tap the collar (the top ridge). Follow through with the saber in one gesture. Be sure not to try to cut the top off the bottle. If you chip the glass at all your angle is wrong and you are using too much force. Back off, adjust your angle and try again more softly.

ENJOY!

 Follow these instructions and (after a few practice runs) you’ll be sabering at every occasion.

This is definitely the best rooftop bar in Boulder, with great unobstructed views of the mountains. They have delicious food, a wide variety of beers and a great selection of bourbon. The atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable, making it the perfect place to relax after a day on the mountain.

Rio Grande

At the Rio Grande Mexican restaurant you can drink one of their famously strong margaritas while looking straight out at the Flatirons. For the hottest days they have water misting onto you so you can relax out there as long as you like. Make sure you also grab something from their menu to soak up some of the tequila, I’d recommend the baked chile rellenos.

The Lazy Dog Sports Bar & Grill

The Lazy Dog is a great place to relax and grab a drink and a burger from their rooftop bar. It’s also a great place to watch the game or listen to a live band. You can also grab a full breakfast on your way to the mountain on Saturdays or Sundays (or nurse your hangover with a breakfast burrito and a drink).

Boulder is one of the best places to take in beautiful scenery, get active and enjoy the mountains. Be sure that you also enjoy yourself after your active day and grab a beer with friends at one of these awesome rooftops.

When travelling I always try to eat as much of the local cuisine as possible, but the one meal I can never quite get accustomed to is breakfast. In China, breakfast often includes fried noodles, rice and dumplings. They’re all foods that I enjoy any other time of day, but I need a good American style breakfast to start the day right. So, here are a few of the best brunch options to try in Shanghai.

La Creperie

La Creperie does set brunch specials on Saturdays and Sundays for. They have two locations; one in Jing’an and one in the French Concession.  The savoury galettes and sweet crepes are to die for.  I’d recommend the La Saint Quay with bacon, egg and cheese.

Liquid Laundry

Liquid Laundry call themselves a “New York –Style Industrial Gastropub”.  Meaning they serve excellent food and drinks in an industrial – chic style pub.  They serve comfort food with a bit of extra flair. I mean, does it get any better than a flight of bacon?

El Luchador

El Luchador is a Mexican style restaurant located in Xintiandi. They recently started doing Weekend Brunch specials that are sure to cure your hangover. The set includes ceviche, tortilla soup, chicken skewers, a  gordita, a, huevos ahogados, mini breakfast burrito and a beer, soft drink or Michelada and a shot of tequila for desert!

Mr. Pancake House

Mr. Pancake House is good for your classic American style brunch without a lot of extra fanfare. They do bottomless coffees, which is always good on a Sunday morning. They have a couple of locations in the Jing’an area.  The Wuding Road location is cute and cozy, but fills up quickly on the weekend so be prepared to wait for a table. They also do great weekday breakfast specials that include a coffee or tea.

You’re never bored if you spend the day on Venice Beach. It’s just down the road from Santa Monica but feels like a world away. Where Santa Monica has frozen yogurt and Ferris wheels, Venice Beach has skate boards and medical marijuana dispensaries. It’s definitely worth spending some time soaking up the atmosphere and people watching. Larry’s

Larry’s bar is on Windward Ave, next to several souvenir and beach clothing stores. Closer to the beach you’ll find food trucks on the weekend, and it’s a quick walk to the skateboard park. Larry’s has excellent and reasonably priced meals for lunch or dinner if the food trucks aren’t doing it for you. If you just want a beer you can sit at the bar and one of their mixologists will make you a cocktail to die for.

Danny’s

Danny’s is right across from Larry’s on Windward Ave, and with the great location just off the boardwalk it’s a great place to stop in after your day at the beach. The food is basic pub food, with some good happy hour specials every day of the week. They also host live music and comedy nights throughout the week. They also have big screen TVs that make it a great place to watch the game with local Venice Beach residents.

The Venice Beach Ale House

This is a favourite location of Pink, who lives somewhere nearby. They have a great variety of craft beers and delicious food. You can get a flight beer served on a skateboard, and try a few different options.  Unlike the other bars on this list they are right on the boardwalk so it’s a better option during the day when  you can people watch and continue to soak up some rays. Be prepared to wait if you go on a weekend though, they fill up quickly.

High Rooftop Lounge

High Rooftop is one of the best places to grab a drink in Venice Beach, with definitely the best view of the whole beach, palm trees and the ocean. They have a great selection of wines and cocktails, and appetizers to share. It can get windy there in the winter so they have heat lamps and blankets to keep you warm while you enjoy the amazing sunset over the Pacific Ocean.

1. Pace yourself. The clubs are all unique and spectacular; you’re going to want to remember them all. So, do not drink a whole bottle of champagne in the party limo on the way to the first club.

2. Dance! But not on a pole or on the stage. Leave it to the professionals; this is not an amateur sport. They get paid the big bucks for a reason.

3. Take pictures. There are great light shows, beautiful architecture, people dressed up or on stilts in these clubs. The pictures might be dark but add a few filters and you’ll have a great reminder of your night out.

Introduce the new love of your life/night to your friends and meet the people they want to take home too. You’ll mitigate the effects of beer goggles so you all feel happier about it in the morning.

6. Make sure you know how to get home. Take a business card from the hotel you’re staying in, or have the map     saved on your phone. It’s much easier to give this to a taxi or uber driver than trying to remember an address at the end of the night.

Follow these simple rules and you are sure to have the best night out in Hollywood, that you can actually tell people about.
