Pabst Blue Ribbon, better known in modern times as PBR, made its first radio appearance in 1942 when the owners found it beneficial to collaborate with various celebrities and musicians to help reach a broader audience. Many of these household names had never even tried the beer. The brand started gaining popularity through various television ads during live sporting events and eventually found a home in reputable magazines.

It wasn’t until 1973 that Pabst truly broke into the music scene when it was romanticized in a Top 5 country hit by Johnny Russell called, “Rednecks, White Socks, and Blue Ribbon Beer.”

The brand had a disco phase in 1979 when actor Patrick Swayze endorsed its perfection, much like his hair, in one of the best beer commercials of all time.

Beyond popular culture lies the gritty punk and rock music scene in which performers at dive venues are paid in beer and merchandise sales. PBR became the staple brew due to its inexpensive cost and reliable and smooth taste. Popular rock clubs will offer tall boys, pitchers, and regular cans as incentive for bands to return for future events, and oftentimes the patron drink specials will include a hefty discount on the product.

While Pabst Blue Ribbon is famously cheap, the quality isn’t particularly lacking. It has been a household lager for decades and has actively supported musicians and artists of all genres and calibers. PBR is a source for bands to socialize and bond in hopes of cultivating an even greater and stronger artistic community.

Currently, Pabst Blue Ribbon offers grants to select bands and artists who submit their music, videos, and biography through an online application. Known as the PBR Music Foundation, the brand generously donates money to one deserving band or artist per month who have shared their stories about struggles, goals, and how music has impacted their lives.
