Many times, the truth just needs to be heard. Many times, people will be glad that you’ve said what you felt. Sometimes, people are relieved when you finally say what you are truly feeling. Other times, they resent you for it. Remember that old saying? “Stick and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me.” That’s false. Don’t believe me? Try to think of a time when someone said something, anything, that pissed you off or made you feel uncomfortable. I’ll wait…..

Well, that didn’t take long. By the way, I’m sorry for bringing that up. You get the point. So why is it we get so moody when whiskey hits our lips? Why do we speak our mind when the wine starts flowing? Where does this bravado and liquid courage come from?

Simply put; alcohol consumption lowers our inhibitions. Inhibitions are what make us self-conscious and less likely to act how we feel. Alcohol doesn’t make us do bad things, but it does lower our inhibitions. This means that we don’t think much about how things will play out after we say or do something, we also don’t care as much for whatever the consequence may be (at the time).

Alcohol demands our brains to release more serotonin and endorphins. These chemicals dictate our emotions and how we feel. The more we drink, the more our brain is affected, ultimately swaying our moods based on our circumstances. It could be the tension within a fight between you and your partner or even the excitement you feel when entering a bar or club. Whatever the situation is, we feel so revved up about it because we have an excess of mood altering chemicals flooding our brain. 

Next time you enjoy a few adult beverages, keep Jean-Jaques Rousseau’s french philosophy in mind, “A drunk mind speaks a sober heart.” Or maybe don’t take what he says too personally. After all, he was known to be a bit of a drunk himself. At least he speaks the truth! Right?

Do a paint-by-number.

For people who love to sit down with paint and a brush but aren’t particularly artistic, paint-by-numbers are a fun alternative to blank canvases. Plant something.

Start a blog or journal.

If you’re already pretty fit or maintaining, even a sweet glass of Riesling clocks in at about 4g carbs.

4. Vodka-Soda

THE QUARANTINI

A new spin on a yellow fever, the quarantini is a combination of sweet and sour- kind of like life when you’re stuck at home.

1 1/2 ounces vodka
1/2 ounce Galliano
1/2 ounce lime juice
1 ounce pineapple juice
garnish with toilet paper to show how rich you are

THE CURE

Find some old test tubes or beakers you have laying around and come up with your own cure- for quarantine boredom- with this delightful mix. You can substitute with any blue liquor.

2 oz Hypnotiq
2 oz white wine
splash of ginger ale
serve in beaker for maximum effect

The Social Dist-shandy

This one is for sharing with your social distancing buddies while relaxing in your yard watching the grass grow.

1 bottle Budlight beer
2 oz peach brandy
splash of strawberry lemonade
garnish with a face mask to make sure no one coughs into it

THE BOREDOM BOWL

This is for the third week of quarantine, when you’ve organized your entire closet, deleted all 700 of your spam e-mails and watched everything on Netflix. It’s boring, but delicious.

2 oz strawberry liqueur
2 oz strawberry Budlight Seltzer
splash of orange juice
garnish with a strawberry that you have removed all the seeds from with tweezers

The Appellation Cooler

It’s always fun when you come across a drink that’s ‘grammable as well as tasty. Because wine-based cocktails are popular in many of today’s hipster-oriented and farm-to-table restaurants, the cocktails are getting quite comely. The names are pretty cool, too, as in the case of the Appellation Cooler. It’s light, fresh, and herbal—the basil vermouth is easy to make, by the way; you just fill a jar with sprigs of loosely packed basil, then pour in the vermouth and let it sit for an hour. After that, strain it into a new jar and put in the fridge for up to two weeks.

Recipe:

8 ounces of dry white wine
4 ounces of Cocci Americano
4 ounces of basil vermouth
4 teaspoons of apricot liqueur
4 ounces of chilled dry sparkling wine
Ice
Slices of seedless cucumber for garnish

Pour the dry wine, Cocci Americano, vermouth, and apricot liqueur into a pitcher, then fill it with ice and stir to combine. Now stir in the sparkling wine and garnish with the slices of cucumber.

Everything’s Coming Up Rosé

As you can probably imagine, this cocktail is rosé-based. In fact, it’s sangria, but we promise that it’s unlike any sangria you’ve ever tasted. It includes Aperol, which adds a pleasant bitterness, but there’s also a delicious, delicate hibiscus tea that pleases the palate so much, it’s easy to go through several glasses of this without even realizing it.

Recipe:

8 ounces of dry rosé, chilled
4 ounces of Lillet rosé
4 ounces of brewed hibiscus tea, chilled
2 ounces of freshly squeezed lemon juice
2 ounces of simple syrup
1 ounce of Aperol
4 ounces of club soda, chilled
Ice
Sliced strawberries, lemon wheels, and halved grapefruit wheels for garnish

Prepare a punch bowl or pitcher, and pour in the rosé, the Lillet, the tea, the lemon juice, the syrup, and the Aperol. Add ice and stir, then stir in the soda and the fruit.

Late Harvest Wine and Campari Cocktails

This cocktail was made for grilling season. If you’re ruling the grill, you’ll want one in hand. If you’re handling everything else, you’ll want several. It’s refreshing and mellow with a bittersweet flavor that’s sure to keep both you and your guests coming back to the punch bowl. Seriously, try serving this at your next BBQ. We swear it will be a hit.

Recipe:

3 ¾ cups of sweet, late-harvest white wine, like Riesling
2 ¼ cups of freshly squeezed orange juice
1 cup of Campari
Ice

In a punch bowl or pitcher, pour in the white wine, orange juice, and Campari. Stir gently and refrigerate for two hours or so. When you’re ready to serve the drinks, pour them over ice.

1. Cheers! To test for poison

The tradition of clinking one’s glass against another was really a method of testing whether wine was poisoned by sloshing one’s drink into another person’s cup. If the opposing person wouldn’t drink their wine, then neither would you (but what a waste!). This would be similar to the host of the party taking the first drink to assure their guests that the wine wasn’t poisoned. Thankfully we have the FDA to take care of those issues for us now.

2. Wine doesn’t really belong in the kitchen

Kitchens, with all the stovetops and ovens and microwaves and toasters are too hot for a bottle of wine left out. On the other hand, fridges are too chilly. The absolute best place to store your wine is in a cool, dark closet—or wine cellar if you’ve got one. I mean, if you have any left over to store that is.

3. Keep the wine on its side

Like humans, wine bottles are best left lying down. This is due to the necessity of the cork staying wet. If the cork shrivels up and dries out, it could shrink and allow air into your precious bottle of Pinot Grigio, giving it a premature expiration date.

4. Fear of wine?

Believe it or not, there is such a thing as fear of wine. It’s called oenophobia, and actually causes much suffering for those afflicted. Imagine not being able to indulge in the bacchanalian pleasures!

5. Blend to perfection

Many times, red wine straight from a freshly opened bottle does not taste anywhere as good as its aired-out counterparts. A quick (and cheap!) way to solve the issue is to dump the wine into a blender and blend to aerate! Trust me, this one is a life-changer.

With this newfound knowledge, try to up your wine game and impress your less cultured friends! Or just use it as an excuse to buy yourself another bottle of merlot—go on, you earned it.

Ravine Vineyard

Ravine Vineyard was established over 100 years ago and is still run by the Lowry family. The tasting room is in a beautiful old farmhouse and their tastings include 4 wines. They have a good selection of whites and reds. I also recommend trying the Cabernet Rose; it tastes of cherries and has a great dry finish.

Between the Lines

Between the Lines is another family run winery. The family farm was started by the German parents of the current owners, who studied winemaking in Germany so the wines have a bit of a German influence to them. The winery is still small and you get great service with the tasting. I recommend trying the Cabernet Franc, it’s full bodied with the taste of plum and black pepper.

Konzelmann Estate Winery

Konzelmann Estate has a great location right on the lake, making for spectacular views. They have several award winning wines, including ice wines. Their tours are particularly informative and interesting, if you are going to take a full tour at one winery in Niagara, this is the one to do. Once you get to the tasting, I recommend trying the Vidal Ice Wine, they’re sweeter than other wines and very unique.

Once you’ve finished up your tour of the Niagara wineries, make sure you stop at one of the many fresh local fruit stands to pick up peaches, pears, cherries or whatever else is in season before you head back across the border (or head to the casino).

Cat pee

This is a common aroma found in Sauvignon Blanc. The tangy smell is reminiscent of cat urine.

Leather

I usually prefer to wear my leather over drinking it but this aroma is common in many wines with heavy tannins.

Tobacco

You probably don’t want to mix your wine with tobacco, but you’ll often get a wiff of cigars when drinking Cabernet Sauvignon.

Barnyard

You’ll often hear people mention a barnyard smell when tasting wine, this basically means the wine smells of manure. Sounds awful, right? But this marks some of my favorite wines like Pinot Noir.

Roses

Okay, a little more pleasant than the smell of manure but still not what you’d expect from something made of fermented grapes. You’ll find this aroma in many different types of wine including Gamay, Sangiovese and Grenache

Asphalt

There’s nothing better than the smell of wet asphalt right? Well, this can be true in a nice white wine with medium acidity.

Petrol

The smell of petrol or gasoline is actually a sign of a well-aged Riesling.

These aromas may seem strange, but don’t let them put  you off. They’re subtle or identifying them will make your wine tasting more interesting and fulfilling.

Step 1: Chill the bottle

The bottle needs to be cooler than you would normally keep a sparkling wine. You can submerge it in a lot of ice, but I usually just stick it in the freezer for half an hour or so. It should be long enough to be very cold but not frozen.

Step 2: Find a good spot

The entire top of the bottle is about to shoot off so make sure you are not performing this directly facing anyone. It will come off with some force so be careful of anything fragile – you’ll lose a lot of the effect if you saber the bottle and break an expensive piece of artwork. Outdoor space is perfect as it will give the cork space to fly, but don’t do it out of a high window or the people below could get a nasty surprise.

Step 3: Gather a crowd

What’s the point of sabering if you don’t have a good crowd to wow?

Step 4: Pick a good saber (or knife)

The key here is to find something you can control well, it does not need to be heavy. You’re not cutting or hacking at the bottle, some people can do it with a small hit from the end of a wine glass. I recommend starting with chef’s knife.

Step 5: Remove the foil and wire from the top

Take all the foil off the top of the bottle and remove the wire basket so your saber and the cork are unimpeded.

Step 6: Find the larger seam of the bottle

Run your fingers around the bottle and you’ll feel a horizontal seam on either side of the bottle. Feel for the thicker of the two seams and place that facing up.

Step 7: Hold the bottle at a 20 degree angle

The key to this is in the angle of the bottle and your saber. If you have it at the correct angle you won’t need much pressure at all to achieve the perfect beheading.

Step 6: Behead the bottle

This is the final step, slide your saber of choice parallel to the bottle along the seam, up the neck and in a smooth motion tap the collar (the top ridge). Follow through with the saber in one gesture. Be sure not to try to cut the top off the bottle. If you chip the glass at all your angle is wrong and you are using too much force. Back off, adjust your angle and try again more softly.

ENJOY!

 Follow these instructions and (after a few practice runs) you’ll be sabering at every occasion.

You’re never bored if you spend the day on Venice Beach. It’s just down the road from Santa Monica but feels like a world away. Danny’s

Danny’s is right across from Larry’s on Windward Ave, and with the great location just off the boardwalk it’s a great place to stop in after your day at the beach. The food is basic pub food, with some good happy hour specials every day of the week. They also host live music and comedy nights throughout the week. They also have big screen TVs that make it a great place to watch the game with local Venice Beach residents.

The Venice Beach Ale House

This is a favourite location of Pink, who lives somewhere nearby. They have a great variety of craft beers and delicious food. You can get a flight beer served on a skateboard, and try a few different options.  Unlike the other bars on this list they are right on the boardwalk so it’s a better option during the day when  you can people watch and continue to soak up some rays. Be prepared to wait if you go on a weekend though, they fill up quickly.

High Rooftop Lounge

High Rooftop is one of the best places to grab a drink in Venice Beach, with definitely the best view of the whole beach, palm trees and the ocean. They have a great selection of wines and cocktails, and appetizers to share. It can get windy there in the winter so they have heat lamps and blankets to keep you warm while you enjoy the amazing sunset over the Pacific Ocean.
