As one of our latest partners celebrates their 1st Year Anniversary, we wanted to congratulate them on the good news! We recently bumped into each other out there in the wondrous world of social media and ever since… well, I guess you could say BeerRightNow and Sommbeer have become quite the pair of drinking buddies! When you take a beer community like Sommbeer is building and mix it with a lifestyle of beer delivery at BeerRightNow – it’s only a matter of time before you have a chat about beer.

Craft brew enthusiasts champion the idea of community and Sommbeer.com exudes that quality. The contributors include blue-collar workers and a marketing agent; a poet and a historian; married folks and a stay at home dad; Australians, Canadians, and Americans; and those who love pumpkin beers and some who detest them.

And that’s just the writers.

 Sommbeer.com’s community involves avid readers, social media friends, and even quite a few that own their own beer blogs. Isn’t that what that craft-brewing community is all about?

But wait, there’s more.

Sommbeer.com brought together two factions of people that otherwise would never speak – Blackhawks fans and Red Wings fans. That’s like Darth Vader and Yoda hanging out together at spa.

Can you imagine if Sommbeer.com had been around a couple of hundred years ago?

• Custer and Sitting Bull would have met in South Dakota for a local rib-fest.
• The Japanese would have arrived in Pearl Harbor to drop off their share of a beer trade.
• Yoko Ono would have been the Beatles’ beer mule.

Ok, maybe not.

Still, it is a place where “everybody knows your name” and it reminds us all that – to borrow an idea from James Carville – it’s about beer, stupid.

I started writing for Sommbeer in the winter of 2014. Before that, I swam in a sea of craft-brew anonymity. Before long, I found myself conversing with craft-brew nerds from all over the world. I’m not kidding. Since my first article, I’ve grown from 250 followers to 1,000, which includes followers from eight countries on three different continents. And many others share my story. That’s impact. That’s community. More importantly, that’s a copious amount of craft brew friends drinking and chatting about good beer in a relaxed fashion because they…

… “Don’t take serious beer too seriously.”

Man Bun – Pretty self explanatory. Basically it is at the same “bun” hairstyle a girl would have but now on a guys with long hair also.

Dad Bod – Ok, this one is a little strange mostly because of the title. However, the concept behind “Dad Bod” is a guy who has a body that indicates he does go to the gym and works hard to maintain a good image.  At the same time, his body also shows he likes to eat and be lazy at times as well. In other words, he looks like he puts in work but not too much work.

To me this is confusing. Some girls say they want a rough, masculine looking guy but at the same time their jaws drop for a guy with his long hair in a bun? Most girls lose themselves completely when they see a ripped, washboard stomach on a guy but now they love a little extra cushion more?

Again, I am not really saying one standard is better than the other, I (and I’m sure many other guys) are just confused. We’re guys! We need direct 1+1=2 communication. I think the “Man Bun” and the “Dad Bod” only go on to cause more confusion. Not to mention we now see excessive amounts of both on guys who can and really can’t sport these new trends.

So, again I ask:  When will it end? However, being a “glass half full” kind of guy – in the midst of this confusion, I think I’ll just have a beer to take the edge off!

Context Effects:

Today as I was sitting in a lecture for my Psychology class we went over an interesting topic that sparked my interest right away when the professor explained the concept with beer. The concept I am referring to (for all you Psych majors out there) is Context Effects. In short, it is when, “the ability to recall is improved when in the same context as the initial experience.” -“Psychology” by David G. Myers

Now, being a lecture hall full of college students, it is safe to say 78% of the class was probably not paying attention when the professor introduced this concept. So, to make things more interesting the professor asked the million dollar question to engage everyone immediatly:  “Shall I explain using the concept of drinking and studying?”

Context Effects + Beer:

In many studies it has been shown that there is a link between studying and good exam scores when you are in the same mental state studying for the exam as you are taking the exam. This is because your brain is able to recall information much more efficiently if it is in the same state in which the information was originally learned. Applying it to beer, the professor said how with this concept could be just as effective.

This means, if you are cramming for an exam and just so happen to enjoy a beer or two during, it would be possible to perform better during the exam if you followed the same process. So in other words, enjoy a beer or two before the exam as well! Now, of course, this does not mean you should go to a “rager” on frat row the night before you exam! However if you can master the concept of context effects and how it works, hopefully you can introduce beer as a study buddy versus the tempting devil on your shoulder.

On a side note – notice how much fun class becomes when you apply different concepts and theories to beer?!

Of course without moderation drinking can be very hazardous to your health, but we all seem to ignore the positive ends of drinking and what it can do for us. For starters there is the original reason why drinking began in the first place – the relaxer. As many of us know, alcohol really does help you destress as it lowers the everyday stress and worries that consume you throughout the day. So, to end your day with a glass or two of wine, you notice the tension that often bothers you seems to fade away for a speck of time allowing you to relax.

Along with alleviating stress, alcohol is also a big boost in our social lives. From work happy hours, to nights out with your friends, alcohol really does help loosen the crowd up and help people get along… when the drinking is kept to an acceptable level versus a remake of The Hangover. This is because along with helping you wind down, alcohol also lowers your inhibitions in this process. So, if you’re the type who panics when they enter a room full of people, a drink or two might help you take on the crowd with stride.

On the same path to eliminate stress, alcohol also helps clear our minds. Believe it or not – I feel there is some truth to this, despite the fact that we spend most of our time hating alcohol which usually does nothing but cloud our mind. Take a first date for example:  When you’re sitting at dinner with your date that you seem to like very much… most of us tend to get nervous. With these nerves, our minds tend to race a mile a minute as we try to make sure we say the right thing, look the right way, smile, laugh, look interested… the list is endless. While you’re feeling this way, you then begin to emulate a different vibe that is just not your usual self. To change this have a drink with dinner! Now, I don’t mean suck the bar dry and offend yourself, your date and just about everyone else in a drunken warpath. But, a drink or two will do the trick to calm you down, loosen you up, and allow a clearer and slower mind that will help keep you from getting lost in worried thought.

Again, alcohol is one of those things we must be careful with. It can be our best friend and sometimes our worst enemy. By finding a good balance in your drinking, one can start to notice a lot of the benefits that can come out of it as well.

A pure drink straight out of the 20’s, the Moscow Mule is actually pretty simple to make. Of course everyone has their own customized recipes, however most seem to follow the same general standard of half a lime, 2 oz of  vodka and 6 oz of ginger beer (specifically requested brands such as Cock n’ Bull Ginger Beer are said to be the best choices).

So, for all of you who have never tried the classic Moscow Mule – no matter what time of the year, the drink is fairly famous, but with spring being here and summer coming up, now would be a great time to try!

At dinner there is a variety of ways to match your drink to your dish. For example, if you’re going to eat something very heavy like a steak, a stout would pair extremely well and create an awesome combination! The same applies when you are eating seafood like oysters and pair it with a nice porter – where do you think the idea for oyster influenced beer came from?

However, if you’re going to eat something on the lighter side such as chicken or even a full vegetarian meal, you may want to mix in a classic pilsner beer to make a great meal/beer combination! The same applies with wine as wine and the pilsner both work to compliment the food instead of overpowering it like a stout or other dark beer might do.

All in all, when it comes to pairing beer and wine with your food, it really all comes down to personal preference. With many trends and styles you could factor into the way you design your own wine rack, it could really become an involved yet very accomplishing addition to your wine drinking!

• Bohemian Style – a total hipster approach to the subject of wine! So, have fun hitting up the thrift stores for old antiques to be made into new wine racks.

• Modern Style- Definitely a style to go if you the newer way of seeing and doing things. Bend some polished metal and string in some LEDs and don’t be afraid to get abstract with it!

• Classic Style – You know… the type of wine rack an old speak easy would have as they pour a glass for Fitzgerald while he writes The Great Gatsby.

For example, when it’s 85 degrees out and you’re poolside sitting in the sun, do you think you really want to drink a porter or a stout? I would hope not… I love all beer but even that sounds deathly. Instead, you would probably have a lighter beer. Not necessarily a “light” beer but maybe something more in the color range that doesn’t look like you’re going to drink a glass of motor oil.

Maybe bust out an awesome ginger ale like Crabbie’s or a Corona and just about any other beer you can wedge a lime into! So leave that anchoring, warm me up beer at the door and save it for fall fest because summertime is almost here!

So, as we transition from winter to spring, what can we expect when we go to the bars in May versus when we went in December? For starters, there is fruit… and a lot of it. Fruity mixed drinks, sangria, beer that mixes with fruit (do I see a Blue Moon?) – fruit everything! Also, we will start to see our beloved stouts and other thicker beers move to the back of the shelf until next year as all the light beers and pale ales come forth! Not to mention that many bars will begin to transition a lot of their bar activity to the outside to a deck or beer garden of some kind.

As hard as it may be for some, I think it’s time to put your badass, killer winter coat back in the closet until next year. Moving on, I say we all have a lot to look forward to in any bar scene with the beginning of spring and the beginning of the long desired warm weather!
