INGREDIENTS:

• 12 oz. of blackberries
• 1 cup of sugar
• 1 cup of pure lemon juice

• 4 cups of sparkling water

HOW TO MAKE:

• On the stovetop, boil together 1 cup of water with the blackberries and sugar. Stir regularly for a few minutes, then press and strain the berries for all the sweetened juice.
• After you get the pulp and berries out, add the lemon juice, bourbon, and sparkling water.
• Serve with ice in the classiest glasses you have – red solos for Patriot fans and green solos for Eagles fans!

Lost Lake is an inviting tiki bar located on the border of the Avondale and Logan Square neighborhoods of Chicago. Another project by the Alinea group, Grant Achatz’s upscale cocktail lounge will not let you down. The West-End Tavern

This is definitely the best rooftop bar in Boulder, with great unobstructed views of the mountains. They have delicious food, a wide variety of beers and a great selection of bourbon. The atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable, making it the perfect place to relax after a day on the mountain.

Rio Grande

At the Rio Grande Mexican restaurant you can drink one of their famously strong margaritas while looking straight out at the Flatirons. For the hottest days they have water misting onto you so you can relax out there as long as you like. Make sure you also grab something from their menu to soak up some of the tequila, I’d recommend the baked chile rellenos.

The Lazy Dog Sports Bar & Grill

The Lazy Dog is a great place to relax and grab a drink and a burger from their rooftop bar. It’s also a great place to watch the game or listen to a live band. You can also grab a full breakfast on your way to the mountain on Saturdays or Sundays (or nurse your hangover with a breakfast burrito and a drink).

You’re never bored if you spend the day on Venice Beach. It’s just down the road from Santa Monica but feels like a world away. Where Santa Monica has frozen yogurt and Ferris wheels, Venice Beach has skate boards and medical marijuana dispensaries. Larry’s

Larry’s bar is on Windward Ave, next to several souvenir and beach clothing stores. Closer to the beach you’ll find food trucks on the weekend, and it’s a quick walk to the skateboard park. Larry’s has excellent and reasonably priced meals for lunch or dinner if the food trucks aren’t doing it for you. If you just want a beer you can sit at the bar and one of their mixologists will make you a cocktail to die for.

Danny’s

Danny’s is right across from Larry’s on Windward Ave, and with the great location just off the boardwalk it’s a great place to stop in after your day at the beach. The food is basic pub food, with some good happy hour specials every day of the week. They also host live music and comedy nights throughout the week. They also have big screen TVs that make it a great place to watch the game with local Venice Beach residents.

The Venice Beach Ale House

This is a favourite location of Pink, who lives somewhere nearby. They have a great variety of craft beers and delicious food. You can get a flight beer served on a skateboard, and try a few different options.  Unlike the other bars on this list they are right on the boardwalk so it’s a better option during the day when  you can people watch and continue to soak up some rays. Be prepared to wait if you go on a weekend though, they fill up quickly.

High Rooftop Lounge

High Rooftop is one of the best places to grab a drink in Venice Beach, with definitely the best view of the whole beach, palm trees and the ocean. They have a great selection of wines and cocktails, and appetizers to share. It can get windy there in the winter so they have heat lamps and blankets to keep you warm while you enjoy the amazing sunset over the Pacific Ocean.

Spirits

Koval Distillery has taken their place as the Chicago’s first distillery since the 1800’s. Those are pretty big shoes to fill, but Koval does it so well. They produce an array of offerings including dry gin, barrel gin, and vodka. Koval also has an extensive line of Whiskey varieties. Brandy fans will flock to their small batch brandies, including apple brandy, pear brandy and a unique sunchoke brandy. Using an artisanal spirit will give the proper foundation to a delicious homemade cocktail.

Liqueurs

In addition to their line of spirits, Koval Distillery also offers an extensive line of liqueurs. Current flavors include Caraway, Walnut, Rosehip, Jasmine, Chrysanthemum & Honey, Ginger, Coffee and Orange Blossom. This lineup leaves so many directions to go in regards to cocktails. Some of the flavors on the list are even perfect to flavor baked goods, like orange blossom for example. Every liqueur Koval produces are organic and made in small batches. They are packaged in elegant slim bottles, also making them a great gift.

Syrups

Jo Snow is a Chicago based company offering classic and complex bottled drink syrups. These non-alcoholic syrups can be used to make flavored sodas or even snow cones. Their product line includes some ‘go-tos’ like Strawberry Mint Balsamic, Blueberry Basil Lemon and Classic Coffee Flavors (Almond, Caramel, Hazelnut and Vanilla). Jo Snow also offers seasonal flavors based on their favorites from a local Chicago farmer’s market. These are small batch and have limited quantities. With flavors like Rhubarb Black Pepper Lime and Ginger Salted Plum, you’ll want to get your hands on these while you still can.

Tools

There are not city specific, but rather, some basic must have tools for a tasty homemade cocktail. One of the main reasons bartenders are able to craft delectable cocktails at bars, is because they are fully taking advantage of the tools and ingredients available to them. You should be able to find all of these at a local home and kitchen store.

Using a  shaker or stirrer will release flavors. A jigger will maintain consistency across multiple servings. A muddler is a must have for cocktails featuring fresh fruit or herbs, and a strainer is important so your guests don’t accidentally get chunks of fruit in their straws. I also like to use cocktail picks, metal picks to add an embellishment like olives or fruit.

Lokal offers a reasonably priced brunch that includes a pretty competitive bottomless mimosa or bloody mary add on for only $10 each. Their menu includes brunch classics like biscuits and gravy, french toast, and french omelets. Some of their more notable dishes include yummy nutella fritters, pork belly with eggs and the potato pancakes. When visiting Lokal, you can come for the mussels and stay for the bottomless bloodys that put them on this list of best boozy brunches.

Southport & Irving / SIP

This restaurant is hands down the most elegant on the list. For an upscale dining experience consider going to Southport & Irvings SIP brunch service. They have a menu that covers both sweet  and savory cravings. I recommend starting with the  freshly made beignets. Some stand out entrees include fried chicken and waffles, lobster grits and biscuits and gravy. The perfect amount of indulgence after a hangover. Kit Kat Lounge & Supper Club

Kit Kat Lounge hosts a weekly brunch service every Sunday, called the Divalicious Brunch, hosted by a lovely drag performer. The decor is bright and playful, and the menu alone is worth the trip. They offer a rice krispy french toast and a dish called ‘Big Hot Mess’ that includes fried chicken breast, fresh biscuits, topped with sausage gravy and two eggs served sunny side up (amazing). On top of all that, they offer bottomless mimosas for $14.95 with your food purchase, totally worth it.

Flo

This local favorite boasts a ‘fresh new take on new Mexican cuisine in a casual, energetic, and inviting environment.’ They have two locations, one in West Town, and the other in Lakeview. The menu here is very creative. Some of the stand out dishes include Fruity Pebbles French Toast (also available with Cocoa Pebbles) and Bacon Chocolate Pancakes. Flo offers $10 bottomless mimosas, as if this brunch needed anything more to get the locals in.

The Reservoir

The Reservoir calls itself a local watering hole. It is a spacious, inviting restaurant that also has a sizable patio. All of this plus their drink specials make it a local favorite for boozy brunch. They offer $15 bottomless mimosas with the purchase on an entree, which is a fair request as the food is delicious. You’ll see some midwestern brunch favorites like the fried chicken biscuit, breakfast po’ boy, and the french toast made with Texas toast.
