1. Shandyland

A twist on our favorite candy-themed boardgame, set the game up as normal but every time you pick a colored-square card, follow the following drinking rules:

BLUE CARD- guys drink
PURPLE CARD- girls drink
ORANGE CARD- player who picked the card drinks
YELLOW CARD- player who picked the card picks someone to drink
DOUBLE CARD- player who picked the card drinks and picks one other player to drink as well
PEOPLE CARDS- player must choose a random person/celebrity and other players must ask YES or NO questions until they guess the person. Whoever wins this challenge gets to choose who drinks.
PLACES CARDS- player must choose TRUTH or DARE and the person to the left can ask a question or dare them to do something. The player may opt out by downing the rest of their drink.

Play this game with a delightful shandy recipe using your favorite beer!

2. Battle Shots

You don’t need the game or pieces for this one, but you will need a few other items:
-12 shot glasses (size doesn’t matter)
-a divider of some sort for the middle of the table (you can even stack some books- just make sure the other team can’t see where your battleshots are)
-a marker
-light colored table cloth you can write on

Use a ruler or book to create a battle ship board on the table cloth. Label the x-axis with letters and the y-axis with numbers, place your shots and start calling out coordinates. If you have a shot on B5 and the other team guesses “B5″, you must sink your battleshot- into your mouth. Keep the shots at 1 ounce for maximum play time.

3. Twisted-er

The game of Twister is already hard enough when you’re sober. Make the rule if you fall you drink, and its hilariously impossible. Use food coloring in shots of light colored liquor to make it even more interesting. If you miss a red dot, drink a red shot.

4. Pictionary

This game gets more and more fun as it goes along. Have everyone write phrases on separate index cards. 20 phrases per person is good. It makes it fun to put inappropriate stuff on the cards, but obviously, know your audience. Phrases could be things like “Does a bear scat in the woods?” or “She’s not the brightest crayon in the box.” Divide into teams and start picking cards to draw for the other team to guess. Set a timer for 1 minute and if they haven’t guessed the phrase, they drink and your team gets a point. Whoever has the most points wins!

Don’t mix stuff.

This is true for anytime you’re drinking but in Amsterdam it can be very tempting to try everything in the world at once. With so many things to try, its common for people to start with cocktails and then wander into a coffee shop or truffle store and get a little more twisted than they can handle. If you’re not a veteran smoker, try it on its own without the drink first to see how you react. You can always drink when your high has worn off.

Watch for bikes.

If you’re coming from a place where most people drive cars, you may not be used to people shooting by you on bicycles at all hours of the day and night. In Amsterdam, the bike lanes get just as crowded as the car lanes and are right next to the sidewalk. If you’re not careful, you can easily stumble in front of someone’s bike which would be a tragedy for both you and the rider. Keep an eye out and stay on the sidewalk where others are walking. At crosswalks, look for bikes before you walk.

Don’t take drinks from strangers.

Most people in Amsterdam are well-meaning locals and tourists just looking to have a good time. But, like any city, there are people looking to prey on unsuspecting partiers. Its generally a good rule never to take accept drinks from strangers. If someone wants to buy you a cocktail, make sure its coming directly from the bartender. If you feel stranger that usual from a few drinks, seek medical help to be sure nothing was dropped in without you knowing.

Careful with balloons.

Nitrous balloons are legal in Amsterdam. If you’re not familiar with this, it’s a balloon filled with nitrous gas that you inhale and go on a little trip. It only lasts a few seconds but is not very good for your brain or general health. Many bars sell balloons as well as sketchy street salesman- but I wouldn’t recommend trying it if you’ve had a few drinks. Inhaling the gas affects people differently and can sometimes cause seizures or loss of consciousness. Drinking in addition to nitrous can be especially harmful if you’re not sure how it will affect you.

If you’re concerned about insulin or blood sugar spikes, stick with dry reds like merlot. It is unlikely to significantly affect blood sugar levels and usually has less than 2g total carbs per glass. If you’re already pretty fit or maintaining, even a sweet glass of Riesling clocks in at about 4g carbs.

4. Scorpion Bowls

Pamplemousse

Ah, pamplemousse—so much fun to say! It is, of course, the French word for “grapefruit,” and as we’re sure you’ll agree, everyone should say “pamplemousse” instead, for the entirety of forever. While many cocktails call themselves by this tongue-pleasing term, they are merely masquerading, and you should not believe them. No, if you’re in the mood for a simple drink that doesn’t pack a lot of punch but still tastes delicious, this is the Pamplemousse for you.

Recipe:

1 ounce of dry gin
½ of an ounce of elderflower liqueur
1 ounce of freshly squeeze grapefruit juice
½ of an ounce of freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 large basil leaf for the garnish
Ice

Grab your cocktail shaker, fill it with ice, then add everything except the basil and shake vigorously. Strain the mixture into a coupe glass that you’ve chilled, then float the basil leaf on top.

An Americano

The Americano is simplicity itself. It’s low-key, laid-back, and it has less alcohol than most traditional cocktails. It lends itself quite well to sipping, especially on a long, hot afternoon in the summer. It’s a popular cocktail for the Fourth of July, as well, but to be honest, that’s mostly because of the color. You won’t want to reserve this for just one holiday. If you’ve never tried it, we implore you to give it a taste.

Recipe:
1 ounce of Campari
1 ounce of vermouth
Club soda
1 orange twist for garnish

Fill a highball or rocks glass with ice, then pour in the vermouth and the Campari. Top it off with the club soda, then place the orange twist wherever you please.

Campari and Soda

Campari is a popular choice for low-key cocktails with equally low alcohol content. It goes down lighter than other liquors, it mixes well, and you get a nice, warm buzz from it without feeling the need to get rip-roaringly drunk. Everybody needs a comfortable, relaxed evening sometimes. A cocktail like this is particularly helpful if you don’t enjoy drinking a lot, but you don’t want to be awkward while you’re out with a group. You’re welcome.

Recipe:

2 ounces of Campari
Soda water
Lime or lemon wedge for garnish

Fill a highball glass with ice, pour in the Campari, then top it off with the soda water. Garnish it with your citrus wedge of choice and serve or sip yourself.

Sangria

Sangria is a lovely, lightweight punch. In theory, it contains a lot of alcohol, but the batches are so big, and there are so many ingredients, the content is safely diluted. That means you can enjoy glass after glass of this, and believe us, you’ll want to. Bear in mind that you can substitute any kinds of wine, fruits, and juices you like. Don’t be put off by the massive ingredients list, either; the execution itself is effortless.

Recipe:

½ of a cup of brandy
¼ of a cup of lemon juice
1/3 of a cup of frozen lemonade concentrate
1/3 of a cup of orange juice
1 bottle of dry red wine
½ of a cup of triple sec
1 sliced orange
1 sliced lemon
1 sliced lime
¼ of a cup of white sugar, optional
8 maraschino cherries
2 cups of carbonated water, optional

Get a large punch bowl or pitcher and add everything except the club soda. Just let the citrus slices and cherries float. Place it in the fridge overnight. If you’re using the water, add it just before you serve the punch.

Cascade Apricot Ale

Classified as a wild ale, the Cascade Apricot Ale knows quite a bit about pairing sweet fruit flavors with the toasty bitterness of hops and barley. Apricot has a subtler sweetness than, say, peaches or similar fruit. They also have an earthy note that beautifully complements the signature taste of a traditional ale. The alcohol itself doesn’t lose any of its darkness or taste, nor does the flavor disappear beneath the apricot, which is practically just a hint, anyway. Raspberry Eisbock

Is there any alcohol that isn’t made ten times better with the addition of raspberries? Eisbock is a bock beer, of course, but it’s extremely potent, incredibly full bodied, and quite malty. That combination, in particular, mixes well with the raspberries. They lighten the somewhat heavy brew, and offer a tart, fresh counter to the rich malt flavor of the Eisbock. Look for a beer like this if you love dark brews but don’t enjoy drinking anything too heavy. Fruit is a fantastic equalizer.

Sliced Nectarine IPA

Nectarines don’t get enough attention, do they? They’re tarter than peaches, which is why they work so well with IPA. The sliced nectarines cut some of the bitterness, but they also benefit from the toasty taste of so many IPAs. Home brewers, remember this flavor pairing. Believe it or not, it’s not altogether difficult to add fruity flavors to your own tasty creations.

New Glarus Strawberry Rhubarb

You’re used to strawberry rhubarb pie, right? After all, it’s a summertime staple. Now, imagine that flavor in beer. The strawberries provide plenty of fresh summertime sweetness—protip for home brewers: think about using wild strawberries, instead—while the rhubarb offers an earthy tartness that balances out the strawberries and heightens the taste of the malt. Pretty magical, huh?

Two parts of butterscotch Schnapps
One part of Baileys

Adios Motherfucker

This bright blue concoction looks so sweet and innocent on the outside, but it’s like a glass full of bad decisions. You know why it’s called an Adios Motherfucker? Because after you get through a single cocktail, it’s goodnight, moon. You won’t remember to drink water once you get home, so the best advice we can give you is to place a water cooler beside your bed before you pass out for the night.

Recipe:

½ of an ounce of vodka
½ of an ounce of rum
½ of an ounce of tequila
½ of an ounce of gin
½ of an ounce of Blue Curacao liqueur
2 ounces of sweet and sour mix
2 ounces of 7-UP

Chill a glass, fill it up with ice, then add everything except the 7-UP—save that to top off the drink. Give it a little stir, take your first sip, and say adios, motherfu—oh, sorry.

Sex on My Face

Interesting name, no? Interesting drink, too. It’s not quite the Big Glass of Bad Decisions the previous cocktail is, but almost. It’s potent enough that, yeah, you might just end the night trying to … well, never mind. You’ll have to see for yourself. If you remember what happens after your first Sex on My Face, remember to tell us the story.

Recipe:

½ of an ounce of Yukon Jack Canadian whiskey
½ of an ounce of coconut rum
½ of an ounce of Southern Comfort peach liqueur
½ of an ounce of banana liqueur
1 splash of cranberry juice
1 splash of pineapple juice
1 splash of orange juice

Fill a tall glass with ice, add all the ingredients, and stir gently. Enjoy!

Hee hee hee! No, but really, this is actually a pretty tasty cocktail. Sweet, yes, it’s terribly sweet, and it contains heavy cream, so it’s quite rich, as well. However, once you see it made, garnish and all, you’ll understand the reason for the name. Frankly, we think it’s kind of adorable, but it also makes us giggle.

Recipe:

¼ of an ounce of Creme de Cacao
¼ of an ounce of maraschino liqueur
¼ of an ounce of heavy cream
Maraschino cherries for garnish

Layer all of the ingredients in a shot glass, exactly in order. Let the mixture chill for half an hour, then garnish with a cherry before serving.

The Catcher in the Rye

It’s no surprise that this cocktail derives its name from J. D. Salinger’s masterpiece on teenage angst and youthful anger. It’s also no surprise that the cocktail contains a lot of whiskey. We’re not kidding. Drink with caution, or else you’re apt to start thinking that you’re Holden Caufield. Put down that cigarette and stop sneering at girls, Holden.

Recipe:

1 ½ ounces of rye
1 ounce of Amontillado sherry
½ of an ounce of Torani Amer
¼ of an ounce of Grand Marnier
1 dash of bitters

Place all the ingredients in your cocktail shaker, after adding ice. Stir it, don’t shake it. Strain the mixture into a glass and garnish with a twist of orange.

The Shirley Temple Black

You all know about the Shirley Temple, right? It’s as precious and sweet as the adorable little imp for whom it’s named. Shirley Temple was America’s sweetheart, particularly during the Depression, when the nation needed someone to cheer up their collective sorrows. It’s no wonder the curly-haired starlet inspired such a sweet, virginal cocktail. But then Shirley got married and became Shirley Temple Black, which inspired a cocktail of another kind. Basically, it’s just a Shirley Temple with actual alcohol in it—usually dark rum (also a play on the name, you see), but honestly, you can use anything you like.

Recipe:

1 ½ ounces of dark rum
1 ½ ounces of cranberry juice
7-UP
Maraschino cherries

Grab a tall glass and fill it with ice. Pour in the rum, then the juice, and top it off with 7-UP. Add the cherries for garnish.

The Tequila Mockingbird

Get it? Like To Kill a Mockingbird! Isn’t that terribly clever? Readers are a punny bunch. We have to say, however, that this is also a ridiculously delicious cocktail. It has a serious bite, thanks to jalapeno, but the heat can help stave off your hangover before it even sets in, which is excellent considering that there’s tequila involved here.

Recipe:

2 ounces of Patron Silver Tequila
1 ½ ounces of watermelon-basil puree
¾ of an ounce of freshly squeezed lime juice
¾ of an ounce of agave syrup
1 jalapeno pepper slice

Muddle the jalapeno in your cocktail shaker, then fill the shaker with ice and add the rest of your ingredients. Shake it up for about ten seconds, then double strain it into a rocks glass that you’ve filled with ice.
