Do a paint-by-number.

For people who love to sit down with paint and a brush but aren’t particularly artistic, paint-by-numbers are a fun alternative to blank canvases. They come with all the paints you’ll need, brushes and a ready-made picture with numbers to correspond with the paints. Even if you’re a little tipsy, these are super fun and can be challenging if you pick the right one. Invite a few friends over to paint or do other projects with you. You’ll create a beautiful piece of art for your home and have fun doing it.

Organize your closet.

We could all use this time to bring some organization into our homes. Pour yourself a glass of vino and start with the closet. Pour another and find all the lids for your storage containers. Invite your friends and family to pick through your closet for items they want and maybe return the favor. By the end, you’ll have a more organized house and a nice buzz.

Plant something.

You don’t need much. A little potting soil, some seeds and sunny spot. A little time in the sunshine digging in the soil does the mind and body good. Research what kinds of flowers or herbs grow best in your climate and how often to feed and water them. Then sit back with a cold wine spritzer (or Budlight Seltzer) and watch them sprout and grow!

Flowers are therapeutic to grow and make your home look and smell fresh.

Start a blog or journal.

Not every one likes the thought of sitting down and writing out their thoughts. But it can be a very therapeutic process, especially when you’re anxious or have a lot on your mind. Drink a glass of wine before you sit down to write to relax you and get the juices flowing. Then just start writing. Even if it’s not Stephen King grade, you might find out a little about yourself and release some stress in the process.

Take a bath.

Nothing quite beats a glass of deep red wine and a warm bath. Dump in that anti-bacterial hand soap to make yourself feel better and sip something while you soak your worries away. Throw in some epsom salts to soothe any sore muscles and remove toxins. Pour your partner a glass too and relax in the tub together.

1. Shandyland

A twist on our favorite candy-themed boardgame, set the game up as normal but every time you pick a colored-square card, follow the following drinking rules:

BLUE CARD- guys drink
PURPLE CARD- girls drink
ORANGE CARD- player who picked the card drinks
YELLOW CARD- player who picked the card picks someone to drink
DOUBLE CARD- player who picked the card drinks and picks one other player to drink as well
PEOPLE CARDS- player must choose a random person/celebrity and other players must ask YES or NO questions until they guess the person. Whoever wins this challenge gets to choose who drinks.
PLACES CARDS- player must choose TRUTH or DARE and the person to the left can ask a question or dare them to do something. The player may opt out by downing the rest of their drink.

Play this game with a delightful shandy recipe using your favorite beer!

2. Battle Shots

You don’t need the game or pieces for this one, but you will need a few other items:
-12 shot glasses (size doesn’t matter)
-a divider of some sort for the middle of the table (you can even stack some books- just make sure the other team can’t see where your battleshots are)
-a marker
-light colored table cloth you can write on

Use a ruler or book to create a battle ship board on the table cloth. Label the x-axis with letters and the y-axis with numbers, place your shots and start calling out coordinates. If you have a shot on B5 and the other team guesses “B5″, you must sink your battleshot- into your mouth. Keep the shots at 1 ounce for maximum play time.

3. Twisted-er

The game of Twister is already hard enough when you’re sober. Make the rule if you fall you drink, and its hilariously impossible. Use food coloring in shots of light colored liquor to make it even more interesting. If you miss a red dot, drink a red shot.

4. Pictionary

This game gets more and more fun as it goes along. Have everyone write phrases on separate index cards. 20 phrases per person is good. It makes it fun to put inappropriate stuff on the cards, but obviously, know your audience. Phrases could be things like “Does a bear scat in the woods?” or “She’s not the brightest crayon in the box.” Divide into teams and start picking cards to draw for the other team to guess. Set a timer for 1 minute and if they haven’t guessed the phrase, they drink and your team gets a point. Whoever has the most points wins!

Don’t mix stuff.

This is true for anytime you’re drinking but in Amsterdam it can be very tempting to try everything in the world at once. With so many things to try, its common for people to start with cocktails and then wander into a coffee shop or truffle store and get a little more twisted than they can handle. If you’re not a veteran smoker, try it on its own without the drink first to see how you react. You can always drink when your high has worn off.

Watch for bikes.

If you’re coming from a place where most people drive cars, you may not be used to people shooting by you on bicycles at all hours of the day and night. In Amsterdam, the bike lanes get just as crowded as the car lanes and are right next to the sidewalk. If you’re not careful, you can easily stumble in front of someone’s bike which would be a tragedy for both you and the rider. Keep an eye out and stay on the sidewalk where others are walking. At crosswalks, look for bikes before you walk.

Don’t take drinks from strangers.

Most people in Amsterdam are well-meaning locals and tourists just looking to have a good time. But, like any city, there are people looking to prey on unsuspecting partiers. Its generally a good rule never to take accept drinks from strangers. If someone wants to buy you a cocktail, make sure its coming directly from the bartender. If you feel stranger that usual from a few drinks, seek medical help to be sure nothing was dropped in without you knowing.

Careful with balloons.

Nitrous balloons are legal in Amsterdam. If you’re not familiar with this, it’s a balloon filled with nitrous gas that you inhale and go on a little trip. It only lasts a few seconds but is not very good for your brain or general health. Many bars sell balloons as well as sketchy street salesman- but I wouldn’t recommend trying it if you’ve had a few drinks. Inhaling the gas affects people differently and can sometimes cause seizures or loss of consciousness. Drinking in addition to nitrous can be especially harmful if you’re not sure how it will affect you.

If you’re concerned about insulin or blood sugar spikes, stick with dry reds like merlot. It is unlikely to significantly affect blood sugar levels and usually has less than 2g total carbs per glass. If you’re already pretty fit or maintaining, even a sweet glass of Riesling clocks in at about 4g carbs.

4. Vodka-Soda

The Cucumber Cooler Cocktail Keeps You Chill

Cucumber is always a good idea, especially in the spring and summer. That’s why spas serve cucumber water—not only does it taste refreshing, but it helps to keep you hydrated, too. See why this is the perfect day drinking cocktail? You get buzzed, but you’re also getting some hydration in there, which significantly decreases the risk that you’ll end up camped out in front of the TV at 5 o’clock in the evening, hungover and watching HGTV in the dark.

Recipe:

1 ½ ounces of gin
4-6 cucumber slices
¼ of a lime, sliced
4 ounces of tonic water
6 mint leaves
1 tablespoon of sugar, optional

Place the gin, lime, mint, and sugar in your shaker, then muddle. Add the cucumber slices and shake hard. Fill a glass with ice and pour in the mixture, then top it off with the tonic water. Stir it, give the flavors a few moments to sit, then drink.

The Bourbon Cherry Cooler Is Cherry

Anything with cherries is a winner. Granted, you can basically use any kind of fruit, but if the combination of cherries and bourbon doesn’t do it for you … well, what’s the matter with you? Seriously, though, this drink will likely put you in mind of a slow-moving Savannah morning, even if you live in New England.

Recipe:

2 ounces of bourbon
½ of an ounce of Aperol
1 ounce of lemon juice
¾ of an ounce of simple syrup (just mix equal parts water and sugar)
2 ounces of sparkling water
8 cherries, pitted

Place the cherries in a cocktail shaker, along with the syrup, then muddle until you’ve crushed the cherries. Pour in the bourbon, Aperol, and lemon juice, then fill the shaker with some ice and shake vigorously. Fill a glass with ice, then strain in the mixture and top it off with the water.

Grapefruit Mimosas Are Sort Of Like Breakfast

Mimosas are a traditional day drink anyway. Specifically, they’re largely considered the ideal brunch drink. Add grapefruit, however, and they’re almost healthy. Grapefruit, in fact, practically turns mimosas into breakfast. If you think that’s a stretch, just drink one or two of these and we bet you’ll change your mind.

Recipe:

1 chilled bottle of Prosecco
3-3 ½ cups of chilled, freshly squeezed grapefruit juice
Simple syrup or sweetener, optional

Get a big pitcher, pour in the Prosecco, then pour in the grapefruit juice. Stir, taste to see if it needs sweetener—the grapefruit can get a bit bitter—and serve when you’re happy.

The White Thyme Stops Time

This drink is next level classy. Seriously, if you ever want to impress somebody with whom you’re out day drinking, order this—or make it, whatever. You might have to explain it to the bartender, but whatever, it’s worth it. Not only is it impressive and neat-looking, it also tastes divine, especially if you’re into hipster-ish kinds of cocktails.

Recipe:

3 ounces of your favorite white wine
3 tablespoons of wildflower honey
3 sprigs of thyme
1 tablespoon of lemon juice
3 dashes of Angostura bitters

Muddle together the honey, thyme, and lemon juice in your shaker, then add the wine and bitters. Stir until the flavors, especially the honey, are totally incorporated, then strain into a glass filled with ice.

The Classic Gin Rickey

Naysayers accuse the Gin Rickey of being a wannabe G&T because the two are similar, but it’s more like the highball’s second cousin, once removed. Rumor has it that the tart, citrus cocktail’s creation was a method of survival, as the first Gin Rickey appeared in 1890s Washington, D. C., in response to a sweltering heatwave. In a bid to battle the elements, bartenders at Shoemaker’s came up with a bubbly drink that hides a sharp, refreshing bitterness.

Recipe:
Half a lime
2 ounces of dry gin
Chilled club soda
A splash of simple syrup, optional

Grab a 10-ounce glass, fill it with ice, and squeeze the lime over the ice. After juicing it as much as possible, throw the lime rind into the glass, pour in the gin, then top it off with the club soda. If you want it sweeter, add the simple syrup.

The Gin Mule

This drink seems a little dubious from the outset, mostly because it includes a generous dollop of ginger beer. However, that’s what gives the Gin Mule its signature kick. The cocktail is adaptable by its very nature—depending on the brand of ginger beer you choose, you control the sweetness.

Recipe:
10 fresh mint leaves
½ ounce of lime juice
1 ½ ounces of gin
2 ounces of chilled ginger beer
½ ounce of simple syrup (more or less depending on personal taste)
1 lime wedge and 1 sprig of mint for garnish

Throw the mint, lime juice, and syrup into a cocktail shaker. Muddle lightly, then fill the shaker with ice and add the gin. Shake it until it’s chilled, but do it gently in deference to the mint leaves. About 10 seconds should do it. Fill a highball glass with ice, strain the gin mixture into the glass, then add the ginger beer and stir the drink. Garnish with the mint sprig and/or the lime.

The French 75

If you ever need an easy way to describe the French 75, a World War I-era cocktail, just explain that it’s basically a Tom Collins that uses champagne in place of the club soda. Honestly, any drink that includes champagne is automatically magical. Once again, you can pretty much adapt it to your taste depending on the champers you pick.

Recipe:
2 ounces of gin
1 ounce of lemon juice, freshly squeezed
2 teaspoons of sugar
Champagne of your choosing; sparkling wine works, too
Maraschino cherry and a lemon spiral for garnish

Grab a cocktail shaker, fill it with ice, and shake the gin, sugar, and lemon juice until it’s thoroughly chilled. Strain it into a flute, top it off with some champagne, and stir it gently to mix. Garnish it with the cherry and lemon spiral.

The Vesper

There’s a famous James Bond quip regarding this drink, wherein the suave agent says, “I never have more than one drink before dinner. But I do like that one to be large and very strong and very cold and very well-made.” Those are the key aspects of a successful, delicious Vesper, which is a twist on the martini.

Recipe:
1 ½ ounces of gin (Tanqueray recommended)
1 ounce of vodka
½ ounce of Lillet Blanc
1 lemon

Fill a mixing glass with ice, then stir in the Lillet Blanc, vodka, and gin until the mix gets cold—30 seconds is about right. Strain the mixture into a martini glass. Slice a strip of the lemon peel for garnish, but squeeze out some of the oil over the drink beforehand.

The Sloe Gin Fizz

The “sloe” in Sloe Gin Fizz is not simply part of the drink name. Sloe berries, dotted across England, are thoroughly soaked in gin and a pinch of sugar. You never want to eat them straight from the bush, but they make this cocktail fresh, a bit tart, and entirely delectable.

Recipe:
1 ounce of sloe gin
1 ounce of gin
½ – 1 ounce of fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon of simple syrup
2 ounces of club soda
Lemon slice for garnish

Fill up a cocktail shaker with ice, then add the sloe gin, gin, ½ an ounce of the lemon juice, and the simple syrup, and shake until cold. You may want to add more lemon juice or simple syrup, so give it a taste first and add whatever is necessary. Fill a glass with ice, strain the mixture into it, then top it off with club soda and add the lemon slice as garnish.

Whether you are down south or you are up north, sweet tea is delicious! I’m from West Virginia, and I can tell you, this recipe for a spiked tea is so simple and yet so delicious. I might’ve gotten a little drunk on this drink at my last brunch.

Recipe:
2 oz. vodka
12 oz. sweet tea
1 orange, sliced (optional)

Mix up the vodka, sweet tea, and some ice. Garnish with the orange slices, and you are ready to go!

2. Get a little blush with Rose Sangria with pineapple and guava

Girls, you want a drink that’ll finally blow your brunch friends socks off? This is it! It’s fruity, it’s sweet, and it goes perfectly with all kinds of brunch items. Give it a little try!

Recipe:
1 750-ml bottle rosé
4 6-ounce cans pineapple juice
2 11 1/2-ounce cans guava nectar
4 cinnamon sticks
2 cups 3/4-inch cubes fresh pineapple
2 oranges, halved through stem end, thinly sliced crosswise
Ice cubes

Mix all of these ingredients in a large pitcher, slide up the oranges for garnish as well as sliding them into the pitcher. Enjoy your drink!

3. Get a little dangerous with this berry cocktail

I’m such a huge fan of sweet, tart and berry drinks. If I am drinking at brunch, I want it to be something fruity, and this dangerous little concoction is perfect for any and all brunch meals!

Recipe:

2 ripe strawberries, divided
1 1/2 ounces aquavit (such as Krogstad)
3/4 ounce fresh lemon juice
3/4 ounce Simple Syrup
1/4 ounce Campari
4 drops orange blossom water

Muddle up the strawberry first, then add in all of the other items along with ice, shake it up and then pour over ice. How marvelous does that sound?

4. Champagne and raspberry sorbet makes for a great drink

Looking for something colorful and bubbly at your next brunch? This is the drink for you! It’s pretty, it’s bubbly, it’s fun, and it’s so easy!

Recipe:
¾ c. sparkling wine (such as Prosecco or cava)
1 tsp. raspberry sorbet

5. Get a little tarty with this hibiscus cocktail

You and your brunch friends are probably a mixture of sweet and tart right? That’s precisely what this cocktail is too! The hibiscus is the tart, and then the sugar is the sweet. Perfect combination!

Recipe:

4 quarts water
2 cups dried hibiscus flower pods
2 cups superfine sugar, plus more to taste

Mix it all together and pour over ice in a sugar-rimmed glass and drink it all up!
