There’s no doubt that wine is a go-to for anyone on a diet. In fact, when it comes to wine there are so many options because alcohol itself contains 7 calories per gram, so it depends on a wine’s alcohol content to determine its calories. Sweeter wines are typically low in alcohol, but high in calories because of the added sugars. It is important to note that most people will consume about 10 oz. of wine in one sitting, and the following wines are listed per 5 oz. serving, from wine with the least calories to the most, the list goes as follows:

  • Non-alcoholic —— 9 calories
  • Light (low alcoholic) —— 73 calories
  • Red wine (Carignane) —— 109 calories
  • White (Sauvignon) —— 119 calories
  • Red (Pinot Noir) —— 121 calories
  • Average table wine —— 123 calories
  • Rose —— 126 calories
  • Dry dessert wine —— 224 calories
  • Sweet dessert wine —— 236 calories

Hard liquor might be best when it comes to keeping your calorie intake down. It may not be everyone’s first choice, but “on the rocks” is guaranteed to be easy on the waist line. If you can’t go completely on the rocks, you can also try adding seltzer, club soda, a little lemon or lime juice, and the calories will stay down while making it more enjoyable to gulp down. When it comes to hard liquors, these are listed in calories per shot (25 ml):

  • Brandy —— 50 calories
  • Vodka —— 53 calories
  • White Rum —— 60 calories
  • Gin —— 60 calories
  • Tequila —— 60 calories
  • Scotch —— 64 calories
  • Whiskey —— 64 calories

It’s pretty obvious that beer is typically everyone’s last choice when it comes to counting calories. There’s really no way around it. If you choose a light beer, calories could be very low- right around 60 calories, but the more alcohol, the more calories. In fact, there’s no denying that one bottle of beer can equal seven slices of bread. If you feel like you absolutely must have beer however, stick with light ones such as, Miller Light, Natural Light, Michelin Ultra, or Corona Light.
