John B and the gang enjoy beer, easy to get and drinkable. In the opening episode the group is seen passing beers around a construction site. What type of beers might they enjoy? In the show they’re shown enjoying classic PBR. But, you can imagine the crew would also enjoy Bud Light, Natty, Keystone, or really any beer that you might use in a game of pong.

Pope’s Pepsi and Rum

Pope is arguably the most responsible of the group, but even he lets loose sometimes. He often enjoys a beer with the crew, and its easy to imagine his drink of choice might be a rum and cola mix.

JJ’s Jungle Juice

Bad boy, JJ, stole the hearts of viewers, and it only makes sense that JJ would swipe alcohol from liquor cabinets to concoct his own jungle juice. Jungle juice often consists of a variety of liquors and juices, and JJ would likely throw in whatever he could scavenge. Try rum and vodka paired with orange and pineapple juice and lemonade.

Hard Seltzer for Sarah

Sarah, who begins the series as a Kook but becomes a sort of honorary Pogue over time, would likely never be seen drinking cheap beer or a random assortment of liquor. Instead, Sarah would opt for a low calorie seltzer like White Claw Grapefruit or Bud Light Black Cherry.

Kickback with Kie

Kiara, who gives off the most hippy vibes of the group, usually opts for smoking over drinking. However, she might also secretly enjoy a beachy cocktail like a Mai Tai, made with light and dark rum, Curaco, lime, and simple syrup.

Game Night

Invite all your friends to a virtual game night. Many rising platforms have been created to serve just this purpose. Trivia 

Host a trivia night for all your friends. Pick out the questions ahead of time and decide on categories. If your group enjoys it, consider rotating hosting duty weekly so everyone gets a chance to participate. You can also invite friends to submit facts about themselves and create a trivia quiz based around your friend group. Or add a drinking element requiring those with wrong answers to take a sip.

Beach Party 

Dig out your favorite Hawaiian shirt, and break out the rum. The nearest beach might be hundreds of miles away but tonight you can pretend the sand is beneath your feet, just out of view of your webcam. Change your Zoom background to a tropical scene, and prepare to party the night away. Try playing the “Hawaiian Name Game” a twist on the traditional movement name game: look up your Hawaiian Name and add an action alongside it, then go in a circle reciting your name and motion, with each person repeating the previous names and gestures as well as their own. This already challenging activity only gets harder and more ridiculous with the addition of alcohol consumption. You can even add rules such as take a drink for every mispronunciation or forgotten movement. 

Movie Night

Grab the remote and settle into bed like you do every other night, except this time with the company of your friends. The extension Netflix party lets you watch a movie with your friends, from the comfort of your respective homes. Consider adding in a fun drinking game to go along with a classic movie. Decide on the rules beforehand, like “drink whenever Allie and Noah kiss” in “The Notebook,” and see if you can make it through the full film.

Cooking Party

Pick a recipe and send out the ingredients list ahead of time. Then, set up your laptop in your kitchen and cook alongside your friends. If you’re the host you might want to consider narrating your actions like on your favorite cooking show. Your friends can attempt to follow along, and you can all enjoy dinner and a drink together. Not exciting enough? Make it a competition. Try baking and decorating cupcakes and seeing whose creation looks like the work of the next baking champ and whose dessert disaster looks more like a scene from “Nailed It.” The loser owes the winner a round of drinks when this is all over.

Try these virtual party themes or create your own, but make the time to keep in touch with your friends. We’re all missing our friends and routines during quarantine, including our wild nights out, but you really can still have fun from the comfort of your own home. Let’s be honest, all you ever really needed to have a good time was some good company and a few drinks.

From the beginning of time, alcohol has been utilized, and often abused, by creatives. There is no argument in determining whether or not alcohol changes the way we feel, act, and think. Ultimately, alcohol changes the way we interact with and interpret things around us. Don’t all “creative people” do just the same? Take a look into a world filled with eclectic thinkers and doers and it won’t take long to curate a list of creatives who enjoy drinking just as much as the rest.

Two of the planet’s most famous painters were known to find inspiration for their works through alcohol. In 1890, Vincent Van Gogh created the famous portrait painting titled “The Drinkers” (below) which portrays four generations sharing a drink together at a table. Another influential artist, Pablo Picasso, shares both an innate ability to paint and the preferred drink of aesthetes at the time (absinthe). Let it be known that Picasso’s last words were upon his death were, “Drink to me.”

A notable Irish poet and playwright to mention is Oscar Wilde. It is he who stated, “Only the unimaginative can fail to find a reason to drink Champagne.” Stephen King, author of The Shining, told The Fix Magazine that he doesn’t remember writing some of his novels spanning over 600 pages long due to his drinking habits. However, many of these famous artists suffered from alcoholism, so is it necessary to form such drastic habits in order for alcohol to influence your creativity?

Australian scientist Dr. Mathias Benedek says otherwise! Dr. Benedek explores two theories which are supported by research composed on those drinking in moderation with just one pint of beer or wine. He found that many people get fixated, or stuck, on one way to solve any problem which presents itself. Alcohol inhibits our ability to focus on just one thing and causes our mind to be a bit more sporadic, meaning we are quick to think of different ways to address something – not always successful in solving the problem, but definitely creative!

With news of this novelty virus spreading its domain, it looks like we’ll be cooped up longer than most of us had imagined. We’re spending less time with each other and more time in our own heads. Stop #1 – Your Favorite Place To Drink

Your favorite place to drink is likely a place which evokes a great feeling from you. For me, this place is Manhattan; with a buzz and some beautiful weather, there’s nothing quite like it – rummaging in and out of bars, hopping from rooftop to rooftop, and walking through a city of strangers not knowing who’ll you’ll meet next in the ever famous NYC.

Stop #2 – What a Day!

As you can see, it’s a bittersweet to travel down this lane. But just because something comes with a bit of pain doesn’t mean it’s not worth it. Yea – let’s keep going.

For this stop, you’ll need your phone. Nobody has these fun filled days of drinking without their friends. Think of a day where drinks and fun were had in excess. Text your friend and tell them how much you miss that day, whatever “that day” is, relive it together with them. Start the conversation which is sure to bring back memories and feelings from a simpler time, a time which will soon come again! Your friend will be glad you brought them for a trip down memory lane and the both of you will look forward to the next day spent together in revelry!

Stop #3 – A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

Please take this next stop with caution. Consider your day and anything else you might have to do before we get into this because you might be here for a while….

You might not remember that drunken photo being taken, but the photo itself is sure to bring you back to a cherished place in time. Find some photos from a birthday, wedding, celebration, or even just a good time with friends. This stop will undoubtedly get you in your feels. 

Whether it’s dusting off the old photo album or going back in time through social media, you’ll need photos for this one. This particular stop is best shared with friends – sending an old picture to a friend or family member could brighten someone’s day… or worsen it. All depends on the picture!

Here are two drinking games that are sure to provide a few laughs for you and your quarantine buddies.

The Google Speakeasy

What you’ll need:
– Drink of choice
– Any amount of friends/ family
– Laptop or smart phone with a camera
– Google Hangout/ Meet, Zoom, or FaceTime

How to play:

1.  Each person in the chat will come up with 3 – 5 questions to ask the group. Each question they create should relate to themselves – time to see who knows you best!

Sample Questions: “What sports did I play in high school?” “What’s my favorite food?”

2.  A question will be asked to the group. Everyone must type their answers in the chat! (This will help decide a clear winner and prevent shouting) First person to respond with the correct answer gets to tell one person to take a sip/ shot of their drink!

3.  One question at a time. When you finish asking all of the questions you wrote, move on to someone who hasn’t asked their questions yet.

Think Fast!

What you’ll need:
– Drink of choice
– 1 quarantine buddy
– Index cards, post-its, or paper

This game involves fast paced drinking….
Which is why it’s best to play with only one person chugging at a time!

How to play:

1.  Each of you will take a few minutes to write 10 – 15 simple questions about one topic below. On the opposite side of the paper you must write the answer.

Tip → Try to keep the questions and answers simple so the game moves fast!

Topics:
– Questions about you/ your life
– Simple math problems (add/ subtract/ multiply)
– Guess this line! (Take from: movies, songs, books, poems)
– Create your own category!

2.  One person will start with their own written questions in hand. They will read the question out loud. As soon as they ask the question they will grab their drink from the table, take a sip at a normal pace, then place it back down on the table.

3.  If the person they are asking does not provide the correct answer by the time their drink returns to the table, they will be given the index card/ paper. Each index card/ paper received counts as one second of chugging. After all questions have been asked, that person must drink for the allotted amount of time.

4.  Switch who’s asking questions!

5.  Take a break from the chugging. Choose the next topic and write some new questions for the next round!

Do a paint-by-number.

For people who love to sit down with paint and a brush but aren’t particularly artistic, paint-by-numbers are a fun alternative to blank canvases. They come with all the paints you’ll need, brushes and a ready-made picture with numbers to correspond with the paints. Even if you’re a little tipsy, these are super fun and can be challenging if you pick the right one. Invite a few friends over to paint or do other projects with you. You’ll create a beautiful piece of art for your home and have fun doing it.

Organize your closet.

We could all use this time to bring some organization into our homes. Pour yourself a glass of vino and start with the closet. Pour another and find all the lids for your storage containers. Invite your friends and family to pick through your closet for items they want and maybe return the favor. By the end, you’ll have a more organized house and a nice buzz.

Plant something.

You don’t need much. A little potting soil, some seeds and sunny spot. A little time in the sunshine digging in the soil does the mind and body good. Research what kinds of flowers or herbs grow best in your climate and how often to feed and water them. Then sit back with a cold wine spritzer (or Budlight Seltzer) and watch them sprout and grow!

Flowers are therapeutic to grow and make your home look and smell fresh.

Start a blog or journal.

Not every one likes the thought of sitting down and writing out their thoughts. But it can be a very therapeutic process, especially when you’re anxious or have a lot on your mind. Drink a glass of wine before you sit down to write to relax you and get the juices flowing. Then just start writing. Even if it’s not Stephen King grade, you might find out a little about yourself and release some stress in the process.

Take a bath.

Nothing quite beats a glass of deep red wine and a warm bath. Dump in that anti-bacterial hand soap to make yourself feel better and sip something while you soak your worries away. Throw in some epsom salts to soothe any sore muscles and remove toxins. Pour your partner a glass too and relax in the tub together.

Enjoy the down time in your home with the ones you love- and a little bit of wine.

Luckily these days companies like Truly and even Budweiser have taken into account the vast majority of people who work hard on their bodies and also want to occasionally go hard in the paint. 

Hard seltzer is the newest addition to the alcohol scene. We’ve all been drinking seltzer anyway- that guilt-free carbonated greatness- and now we can sip it with alcohol at the end of a long day without worrying about gaining a few pounds of bloat in the process.

Lots of companies have jumped on the hard seltzer bandwagon and all boast pretty much the same stats: 100 calories per can, lots of carbonated flavors and a minimal amount of carbs and sugar. A whole new culture has begun in the wake of these light beverages and quite ingeniously pulled gym rats from their eight o’clock bedtimes and back into the fun.

1. Shandyland

A twist on our favorite candy-themed boardgame, set the game up as normal but every time you pick a colored-square card, follow the following drinking rules:

BLUE CARD- guys drink
PURPLE CARD- girls drink
ORANGE CARD- player who picked the card drinks
YELLOW CARD- player who picked the card picks someone to drink
DOUBLE CARD- player who picked the card drinks and picks one other player to drink as well
PEOPLE CARDS- player must choose a random person/celebrity and other players must ask YES or NO questions until they guess the person. Whoever wins this challenge gets to choose who drinks.
PLACES CARDS- player must choose TRUTH or DARE and the person to the left can ask a question or dare them to do something. The player may opt out by downing the rest of their drink.

Play this game with a delightful shandy recipe using your favorite beer!

2. Battle Shots

You don’t need the game or pieces for this one, but you will need a few other items:
-12 shot glasses (size doesn’t matter)
-a divider of some sort for the middle of the table (you can even stack some books- just make sure the other team can’t see where your battleshots are)
-a marker
-light colored table cloth you can write on

Use a ruler or book to create a battle ship board on the table cloth. Label the x-axis with letters and the y-axis with numbers, place your shots and start calling out coordinates. If you have a shot on B5 and the other team guesses “B5″, you must sink your battleshot- into your mouth. Keep the shots at 1 ounce for maximum play time.

3. Twisted-er

The game of Twister is already hard enough when you’re sober. Make the rule if you fall you drink, and its hilariously impossible. Use food coloring in shots of light colored liquor to make it even more interesting. If you miss a red dot, drink a red shot.

4. Pictionary

This game gets more and more fun as it goes along. Have everyone write phrases on separate index cards. 20 phrases per person is good. It makes it fun to put inappropriate stuff on the cards, but obviously, know your audience. Phrases could be things like “Does a bear scat in the woods?” or “She’s not the brightest crayon in the box.” Divide into teams and start picking cards to draw for the other team to guess. Set a timer for 1 minute and if they haven’t guessed the phrase, they drink and your team gets a point. Whoever has the most points wins!

Don’t mix stuff.

This is true for anytime you’re drinking but in Amsterdam it can be very tempting to try everything in the world at once. With so many things to try, its common for people to start with cocktails and then wander into a coffee shop or truffle store and get a little more twisted than they can handle. If you’re not a veteran smoker, try it on its own without the drink first to see how you react. You can always drink when your high has worn off.

Watch for bikes.

If you’re coming from a place where most people drive cars, you may not be used to people shooting by you on bicycles at all hours of the day and night. In Amsterdam, the bike lanes get just as crowded as the car lanes and are right next to the sidewalk. If you’re not careful, you can easily stumble in front of someone’s bike which would be a tragedy for both you and the rider. Keep an eye out and stay on the sidewalk where others are walking. At crosswalks, look for bikes before you walk.

Don’t take drinks from strangers.

Most people in Amsterdam are well-meaning locals and tourists just looking to have a good time. But, like any city, there are people looking to prey on unsuspecting partiers. Its generally a good rule never to take accept drinks from strangers. If someone wants to buy you a cocktail, make sure its coming directly from the bartender. If you feel stranger that usual from a few drinks, seek medical help to be sure nothing was dropped in without you knowing.

Careful with balloons.

Nitrous balloons are legal in Amsterdam. If you’re not familiar with this, it’s a balloon filled with nitrous gas that you inhale and go on a little trip. It only lasts a few seconds but is not very good for your brain or general health. Many bars sell balloons as well as sketchy street salesman- but I wouldn’t recommend trying it if you’ve had a few drinks. Inhaling the gas affects people differently and can sometimes cause seizures or loss of consciousness. Drinking in addition to nitrous can be especially harmful if you’re not sure how it will affect you.

1. KARSK

Karsk is a beverage popular in the rural parts of Sweden and Norway. It is a mix of moonshine and weak coffee served hot with a spoonful of sugar to help it go down. If the drink is too strong, it can be lit on fire to burn some of the moonshine and bring the alcohol content down a bit.

The word Karsk means healthy and vigorous in Old Norse- which makes total sense for a drink combining caffeine with moonshine.

2. SNAKE WINE

Yes, snake wine is what the name suggests- a venomous snake is placed inside a bottle of rice wine or grain alcohol (usually alive) and breaks down in the liquid for months before consumed. Because the venom is broken down by the alcohol, it is safe to drink. Snake wine originated in China but is found in Vietnam as well. It was created to capture the essence and virility of the snake but cannot be exported due to the endangered nature of most of the snakes used to prepare it.

3. KUMIS

Kumis is an ancient brew created by fermenting mare or donkey milk for days until it becomes alcoholic. In the past it was made in saddlebags as people moved from place to place or deep wooden casks. It originated in Turkey but no one is quite sure how long ago people began making it. Kumis is considered its own alcohol class, as its made from milk instead of fruit or grain, and is still enjoyed today in the summer months when animals are roaming their pastures.

4. ABSINTHE

Absinthe is a misunderstood alcohol. It is rumored to cause hallucinations much like LSD or psilocybin, but in reality doesn’t make you any more drunk than any other liquor of its potency. It is generally a greenish color and is made with anise, grand wormwood flowers and other herbs according to where its made.

Absinthe has a long and uncertain history, making appearances in both ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece before being spread all over Europe and later to the Americas. Because of its strength, it was outlawed in many countries and is still banned for sale in the United States.

5. CYNAR

If you were to create a new alcoholic drink, I doubt the first flavor that comes in mind is asparagus-  but that’s exactly what cynar is made from. It is low sugar and 16% ABV. An Italian liquor, it is often consumed before a meal to stimulate the appetite or afterwards to aid with digestion. It is enjoyed across Europe and often mixed with orange juice or even eggnog to curb the bitter taste.

6oz sugar free soda or fruity seltzer
2 oz white tequila
1 teaspoon fresh lime juice

salted rim

3. Wine

Wine is a great choice if you’re actively trying to reduce the amount of carbs and sugar in your diet. What type you should choose depends on your goals.

If you’re concerned about insulin or blood sugar spikes, stick with dry reds like merlot. It is unlikely to significantly affect blood sugar levels and usually has less than 2g total carbs per glass. If you’re already pretty fit or maintaining, even a sweet glass of Riesling clocks in at about 4g carbs.

So have a glass and check yourself out in the mirror, hottie.

4. Vodka-Soda

Vodka-soda is the unsung hero of having fun while keeping your habits in check. Vodka is a zero-carb ally with only about 70 calories per 2.5oz shot. Combined with 0-calorie soda water and a few limes, this is the perfect mixture to give you a little fun without the worry later. Add a little Stevia to sweeten it and some mint leaves for a classic Mo-keto!

5. Low-Carb Beer

You already gave up cookies but you don’t have to give up a cold beer on a hot day. In the wave of low-carb and keto options come a host of beers that boast great hops taste with less carbs. A new spin on a yellow fever, the quarantini is a combination of sweet and sour- kind of like life when you’re stuck at home.

1 1/2 ounces vodka
1/2 ounce Galliano
1/2 ounce lime juice
1 ounce pineapple juice
garnish with toilet paper to show how rich you are

THE VODKA-C 

Put a little vitamin C into your life with this spritzer. Orange juice and any immune boosting powder added to vodka creates a funny little ode to our immune systems and a delicious, hilarious party drink.

THE CURE

Find some old test tubes or beakers you have laying around and come up with your own cure- for quarantine boredom- with this delightful mix. You can substitute with any blue liquor.

2 oz Hypnotiq
2 oz white wine
splash of ginger ale
serve in beaker for maximum effect

The Social Dist-shandy

This one is for sharing with your social distancing buddies while relaxing in your yard watching the grass grow.

1 bottle Budlight beer
2 oz peach brandy
splash of strawberry lemonade
garnish with a face mask to make sure no one coughs into it

THE BOREDOM BOWL

This is for the third week of quarantine, when you’ve organized your entire closet, deleted all 700 of your spam e-mails and watched everything on Netflix. It’s boring, but delicious.

2 oz strawberry liqueur
2 oz strawberry Budlight Seltzer
splash of orange juice
garnish with a strawberry that you have removed all the seeds from with tweezers
