So you’re at a bar, alone, wondering how to make friends. What do you say? Do you sit there and peruse the drinks list? Do you ask for a recommendation? Do you chat up the bartender for a moment?

The key to making friends at a bar is to wear a fur coat. A fur coat. A Fur Coat. Wear it! Try it out. It doesn’t have to be the nicest fur coat; it doesn’t have to be the biggest or best fur. It might as well be faux fur! But pick one up– at your nearest Neiman Marcus or hit up the closest thrift shop (thank you Macklemore for teaching me about these wonderful establishments!).

In any case, wear a fur coat. First off, you will feel immediately cool. A fur coat is a blanket of protection and confidence. People will immediately start to touch your jacket and pet your furry coat. It draws people in, making you a beacon of personality.

Walk in with a grin. A big grin, with the understanding that you may look ridiculous, you may feel ridiculous, but

Second: take the roundabout, long path to the bar. Take the “scenic path”. Take the path that allows you to be seen. But don’t stop here.

Smile at people! compliment them on their shoes! The best idea yet: peek over their shoulder and ask what they’re drinking.

Then, get yourself a drink in hand. Perhaps something neat, something sweet, even a glass of wine will do. Then wait. People will come to see who the cool person in the fur coat is.

And it is a speakeasy in every sense of the word! Do not wear sneakers or even think about pulling out your camera to snap a photo– both offenses are banned.

Industry

Come. Imbibe. Enjoy the night with your friends. The industry doesn’t cater to any certain industry; it caters to them all. Everyone is invited! Beware; the crowd does get wild on Sunday evenings however! But hey– all the more reason to go we think! Plus, they have an excellent happy hour.

Lacroix Restaurant

Serving breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner, Lacroix caters to the creme da la creme of Philadelphia. An excellent location for a special occasion, they have a number of award winning wines and one of the best vibes in the city. Bar 210 shows off their excellent drinks if you come to check the place out and just get a drink. Either way, Lacroix is a beautiful experience!

It’s March… you know what that means. For every American who has any drop of Irish blood in their heritage (and those of our brethren who do not– you are Irish for a day!), it is time to celebrate our patron saint!

Saint Patrick’s Day is upon us, my friends. It is time to celebrate; don your green attire (green eyes do not count), retrieve your shamrock decorations, and make sure you are celebrating right. Don’t forget– if you live in the northeast it is tradition to plant peas!

There is no better party than an Irish party, and as a member of the Irish diaspora, we gather together in cities worldwide to celebrate our heritage. Parades are the main celebration of Irish culture on St. Patrick’s day in the USA, along with drinking numerous pints of green beer. But what are these parades? Where can we gather in unity to party with leprechauns and pinch those not wearing green?

Do not fear!

New York City, New York

What:The largest party ahem…parade is New York City’s very own St. Patrick’s Day Parade through 5th avenue. This five hour long experience provides ample time for several pints of Ireland’s water beer. Really– it is a sight to behold!

When: Thursday, March 17th, beginning at 11:00 A.M. EST. and ending at approximately 4:30 P.M.
Where: The Parade begins on 5th Avenue at 44th Street. It ends on 5th Avenue uptown at 79th Street.

New Orleans, Louisiana

What: Dating back to 1809, New Orleans offers one of the longest standing parade traditions in the United States! But watch out– New Orleans likes to hold on to one special tradition: St. Patrick’s parades are famous for throwing onions, carrots, cabbages, potatoes, and other ingredients for making an Irish Stew.

When: Thursday, March 17th, 6 pm.
Where: Begins at 900 Piety Street, ends at 241 Decatur Street.

Savannah, Georgia

What: Savannah’s artsy scene provides for a large gathering– over a million attendants in recent years! Make sure to wear green at this parade– they can be sticklers!

Where: Begins at Gwinnet street & Abercroft street, ends at Harris & Bull intersection.

Chicago, Illinois

What: Chicago’s upbeat Irish citizens know how to put on a parade — and Chicago goes all out in it’s celebrations. After a huge parade, boats traverse through the Chicago river, dying it a bright Kelly green in this ritual affair! Dotted alongside the Chicago river are an unlimited number of bars– stop in for a St. Patrick’s day special!

When: Saturday, March 12, beginning at 12 p.m.

Where: The parade starts at Balbo and Columbus.

Long Beach, California

What: Go south of Los Angeles to Long Beach, and you will find one of the best Irish parades west of the Rockies! This is a very family-oriented event but— as we said earlier– fear not! There is a beer garden and you are free to drink until you yourself turn into a leprechaun.

When: Saturday, March 12 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Oh no.

It’s your turn to host the monthly dinner party. All ready for the guests to arrive, you’ve prepared the hors d’oeuvres, you’ve set out your nicest silverware, you’ve perhaps had a few drinks yourself (shhhh— we won’t tell!).

Of course, you’ve gotten drinks. You’ve brought the mixers and the alc. You’ve gotten out the glasses. But what drinks do you serve? Surely some drinks are better suited for dinner parties than others.

This is what you will be judged on. Plus, if you serve really really great drinks, some guests won’t notice your salad was picked up from the co-op down the street and will think you are amazing with the Kale. Maybe you’ve grilled some meat outside. But still—drinks are perhaps the most important feature on your menu.

So what do you serve?

Something spicy, something sweet, something dry, and something neat.

1. Something Spicy: The Serrano Grapefruit

• 1 ounce fresh lime juice
• ½ ts  simple syrup
• 1 VERY thinly sliced serrano round (1/8th to ¼th inch wide, a little goes a long way!) the smaller the better
• 2 oz fresh grapefruit juice
• 2 oz silver tequila
• 1½ seltzer water

Salt rim and garnish with lime and salt, adding a grapefruit wedge last.

2. Something Sweet: Amaretto Sour

• 1 Orange cut into wedges
• ½ ts  simple syrup
• 2 oz Sweet and sour mix
• 1 Maraschino cherries
• 3 oz Amaretto
• 1 oz Lemon Soda

3. Something Dry: Champagne!

What’s a party without a little champagne? For those who are fond of the bubbly, we suggest the    ($35).

Described as a “Pale gold with a very fine bead; flowery, delicately toasty aroma with fruit and complexity; creamy, beautifully balanced with a dry, harmonious finish,” this deliciously dry champagne put the “party” in your dinner party.

4. Something Neat: Glenlivet 12 Year Old

Of course, you have to have something neat for the men to taste. An absolute delight, this whisky ($35) is one of the smoothest you will ever have the pleasure of tasting, and will make you feel years younger but with the intellect of a centennial.

So, try these out. Give them a whirl, and hear your friends ranting and raving about how good your dinner parties are.

Mimosas: Life’s saving grace for Saturday and Sunday Mornings. The reason to get up in the morning on weekends. The greatest thing since sliced bread, since the original Grease musical, since iPhones were invented all the way back in 2007. Mimosas are the reason why weekends even exist. But more than that, you have to know the etiquette for mimosa mornings.

Wake up, at about noon, just make sure you have some champagne and orange juice to move. Anyway…. Manifest some champagne and orange juice, whether it’s by buying it from the store or Ubering to a restaurant that serves a flat fee for bottomless mimosas because you, my friend, are taking advantage of that today.

Today is your day, your morning. Manifest some champagne if you’re having mimosas at home. Be sure, if you have friends with you, that the correct champagne bottle to person ration is 3:1 per two hours. So, 6 bottles for two hours if you are having a solo party.

BUT, if you end up going to a restaurant for mimosas (which I highly suggest—restaurants typically serve you well and you don’t have to worry about the cleanup), be aware that there are often rules for this. One trick restaurants like to play is the “Buy the entrée to receive the bottomless mimosas offer”. Another ploy by the restaurant sector is to limit the bottomless mimosas to hours (heresy, in our opinion!).

But back to the etiquette part—that is this what article is about after all, isn’t it!? Well the secret to mimosa etiquette is smiling. See, if you smile, you can keep the mimosa glasses refilled, and nobody will ever question you. Keep the mimosa glass straight when raising them up for a cheers, and you can pour those down without limits.

So, get ready for this weekend. Get your wine glasses out in preparation, or at the very least, pick a restaurant that serves quality mimosas without the tricks.

When you arrive, head straight to the bar. Keep your head down, do not make eye contact with any of your superiors. If you happen to be the head superior, even more reason to keep your head down.

Walk up to the bar. Get a classy drink in your hand so that people know you feel comfortable at the event. Now, and only now do you feel comfortable to go around and mix and mingle with your coworkers.

There is one more piece of advice.

Though the mixture of champagne and some sort of hard alcohol has no doubt affected you to some extent, be a listener and don’t share too much about your life.

We made a list of the most delicious cocktails you can make at home for good reason. Sweet  materials are an essential in any liquor cabinet. Not only do they appeal to women (Helloooo– reason enough?) but even men can appreciate a good Cosmo once in a while. In fact, just yesterday I saw a man sitting at California Pizza Kitchen sipping a Cosmo. I digress.

Without wait, here are five excellent recipes anyone and everyone can follow.

1. Raspberry Margarita

• 5 oz Sweet & sour cocktail mix
• 2 oz Tequila
• 1 oz Cointreau
• 1 oz Raspberry liqueur
• 2 cups ice cubes
• Margarita Salt
• 1 Lime, cut into wedges

Mix together the sweet and sour mix, tequila, Cointreau and Raspberry liqueur into a shaker with ice. Shake until frothy, rub rim of a Margarita glass with the lime wedge and dust in salt. Add ice, and strain liquid into glass. Enjoy!

2. Long Island Iced Tea

• 1 oz Vodka
• 1 oz Tequila
• 1 oz Rum
• 1 oz Gin
• 1 oz Triple Sec
• 5 oz Sweet & Sour Mix
• 2 oz Cola
• 1 Lime Wedge

Fill cocktail shaker with all alcohol and the sweet & sour mix. Cover and shake until frothy. Pour into glass with ice, and strain in the iced tea. Pour the cola, and add a lime for extra pizazz!

3. Red Rooster

• 1 cup Ice cubes
• 2 oz Vodka
• 4 oz Cranberry Juice
• .5 oz Orange Juice

Fill glass with vodka, fill glass 3/4 with cranberry juice before adding the orange juice, and then stir.

4. Lemon Drop

• 4 oz Fresh lemon juice
• 2 oz Vodka
• 1 tsp White sugar
• Crushed Ice
• 1 Lemon, sliced
• 4 sprigs fresh mint

Mix together lemon juice, vodka, and sugar. Stir for 30 seconds, then pour into glasses filled with ice and add lemon & mint.

5. Cape Breeze

• 1.5 oz Jigger coconut rum
• 2 oz Cranberry uice
• 2 oz Grapefruit Juice
• .5 tsp superfine sugar

In a glass, combine rum, cranberry juice, grapefruit and sugar, and stir until dissolved.

Of course, you can always pull out Tinder too. But you might just meet a great new friend. You might go HAM with your future boss. You get to know people in an organic environment, without outside stressors. The airport is not a time waster or a drag, so get to drinking, cheers to this opportunity!
