Order Your Beer

Once you have all the beers, you will want to decide the tasting order. Typically beer tastings go from lightest to darkest. Pilsners are at the very low end of the spectrum, followed by Blondes and Pales. Then Ambers fall towards the middle of the spectrum, and stouts are at the end as the heaviest and darkest. If you’re confused about what order to place your beer in, you can always consult a reference chart.

Keep a Glass of Water Nearby

You’ll want to cleanse your palate between tasting each beer so as not to impair your taste buds. This is also why at tasting they typically offer you pretzels or nuts as a snack. Try taking a sip of water and eating a pretzel if you have some.

Use Small Servings

Remember a tasting is not supposed to consist of finishing a full beer. If you have small glasses use those, or just give a half pour if you’re using a full size glass. At the end feel free to go back and finish your favorites, but for the sake of the tasting try just a few sips of each beer.

It can be fun to do your tasting with friends or a partner to see their reactions to the different styles of beer. You can also keep a log of your favorite styles so you know what to order in the future. You might find your next favorite beer or figure out what it’s definitely not. The most difficult part of candle making in your old bottles involves cutting the glass. For best results use a glass scorer, followed by treating the bottle with rapid heat and cold. Once you’ve broken the glass, sand the edges, and you’ll have the perfect container to make a new candle. All you need is a wick, wax, and fragrance oil. 

2. Floral Arrangement:

3. Lighting:

This can be a really pretty outdoor decor option as well. You can use battery-operated fairy lights in a few wine bottles to light up a porch or patio for a nighttime kickback. For a slightly different take, you can also try repurposing an old handle into the base of a lamp.

4. Savings Funds:

An old bottle can be a perfect budget piggy bank. Depending on the size of the bottle, you can choose to save a little or a lot. Throw your loose change in the bottle or maybe even some cash, and when you’re ready to spend it, smash it open. You can get creative by choosing to save for a specific goal and decorating the exterior of the bottle to represent your investment plans. For example, try decoupaging an old handle with photos of your dream vacation destination. Set a little aside each week, and hopefully one day you’ll crack open the bottle to redeem the funds. 

5. Chalkboards:

Cover your old wine bottle in chalk paint, and you’ll have the perfect mini chalkboard for your kitchen or home bar. Use the board to display fun quotes, and incorporate it into your decor scheme. You can also use the chalkboard to show guests what you’re “currently pouring,” and update it based on your current home wine list. This can be an especially cute touch for dinner parties.

There are many more options to reuse caps in addition to alcohol bottles. Get creative and see what you can come up with to repurpose your empties. If you don’t have any yet, then it’s the perfect excuse to get to drinking. You just have to start by cracking one open.

The Google Speakeasy

What you’ll need:
– Drink of choice
– Any amount of friends/ family
– Laptop or smart phone with a camera
– Google Hangout/ Meet, Zoom, or FaceTime

How to play:

1.  Each person in the chat will come up with 3 – 5 questions to ask the group. Each question they create should relate to themselves – time to see who knows you best!

Sample Questions: “What sports did I play in high school?” “What’s my favorite food?”

2.  A question will be asked to the group. Everyone must type their answers in the chat! (This will help decide a clear winner and prevent shouting) First person to respond with the correct answer gets to tell one person to take a sip/ shot of their drink!

3.  One question at a time. When you finish asking all of the questions you wrote, move on to someone who hasn’t asked their questions yet.

Think Fast!

What you’ll need:
– Drink of choice
– 1 quarantine buddy
– Index cards, post-its, or paper

This game involves fast paced drinking….
Which is why it’s best to play with only one person chugging at a time!

How to play:

1.  Each of you will take a few minutes to write 10 – 15 simple questions about one topic below. On the opposite side of the paper you must write the answer.

Tip → Try to keep the questions and answers simple so the game moves fast!

Topics:
– Questions about you/ your life
– Simple math problems (add/ subtract/ multiply)
– Guess this line! (Take from: movies, songs, books, poems)
– Create your own category!

2.  One person will start with their own written questions in hand. They will read the question out loud. As soon as they ask the question they will grab their drink from the table, take a sip at a normal pace, then place it back down on the table.

3.  If the person they are asking does not provide the correct answer by the time their drink returns to the table, they will be given the index card/ paper. Each index card/ paper received counts as one second of chugging. After all questions have been asked, that person must drink for the allotted amount of time.

4.  Switch who’s asking questions!

5.  Take a break from the chugging. Choose the next topic and write some new questions for the next round!

Do a paint-by-number.

For people who love to sit down with paint and a brush but aren’t particularly artistic, paint-by-numbers are a fun alternative to blank canvases. They come with all the paints you’ll need, brushes and a ready-made picture with numbers to correspond with the paints. Even if you’re a little tipsy, these are super fun and can be challenging if you pick the right one. Invite a few friends over to paint or do other projects with you.
